LO (17 months) was prescribed amoxicillin for the first time this week. I was told one of the more common side effects is that it causes diarrhea, because it also clears out the good gut bacteria, and to try probiotics to help.... I'm just curious, when your LO was on antibiotics, did he/she get diarrhea? How bad was it (i.e., more times than the normal number of poops a day?), and how old was your LO? Also, did it take a while to resolve once the antibiotics were done?

Both my kids have been on amoxicillin multiple times and it's caused them diarrhea, which sucks. As they get older, it seems to affect them less though. Definitely give a probiotic (or yogurt) while they are on it - it helps!

T never did get diarrhea on it but I gave yogurt daily so not sure if that helped.

Yup, amoxicillin and 2-3 times a day at about 1.5. Just the last 2-3 days then cleared up in about a day if I remember right.
If the d persists or is many times a day I would worry about c diff. We will do florastor and culturelle kids for future use.

Yup and got a yeast rash too which didn't help. Next time I'll try probiotics!

Not on amox, but inon a stronger antibiotic. It was so bad we had to keep him home. I asked the doctor about it and he recommended azithromycin and it has been fine, knock on wood.

Bactrim is the only one that gives her really bad diarrhea. With other antibiotics daily yogurt + priobiotic supplement usually kept it at bay.

He's on the same thing right now. The pharmacist said to give yogurt once a day. We have and no bad poop so far. He's been on it since Sunday.

yep, soft squidgy poops - but now 2 days after finishing her meds she seems to be constipated.

I forget which one gave my LO diarrhea, diaper rash, yeast infection but it was miserable. Now it's an automatic if they go on an antibiotic, we immediately pump up the yogurt/kefir intake and add in Florastar or Culturelle into their diet as well.

@BabyTsMom: my whole family gets diarrhea when on a antibiotic, any antibiotic. this is much improved with probiotics for us.

Yup we had LO (who was 20mo at the time) on azythromycin for salmonella
and if def prolonged the diahrrea as we were warned. It was like 2-3 times/day more than usual, lasted for a week as long as we were using the antibiotics, and it was not fun. But different to the sick ones, I'd you know what I mean! Good luck, it's a tough time!
