Someone just rang my doorbell. I asked who it was and he said his name was John and he is trying get donations so he can attend college. I was skeptical and I didn't want to open the door so I told him sorry I couldn't help him. Instead of leaving, he raised his voice and asked me why I didn't want to help him achieve his college dream. He stood there for a minute before going to the next door.
So annoyed. I hate solicitors...especially pushy ones!

We usually just ignore them. My in laws have a small sign on their door telling solicitors to not even bother knocking.

Good for you. I refuse to acknowledge the doorbell anymore because of it.
I just dealt with a similar solicitor on the phone at my office. They were trying to encourage me to leave my current job and work for them; I ended up hanging up because telling the woman 3 times that I wasn't interested didn't seem to work.

I remember when I was a kid, I would always hide when I saw them coming to the door. My parents never answered the door for solicitors, and I would always hide right under the window peaking up at them. I'm almost 100% sure they saw me everytime.....but I thought I was really sneaky.

We just installed a storm door with a sliding window. Lately we've been leaving the regular door open, locking the storm door, and opening the window, so we can get a breeze through the house. On Friday, we were enjoying our usual "Pizza & Movie" night, and some guy comes up and just starts talking to us through the storn door screen! Ummmm, we were obviously doing something, and it was such a weird invasion of personal space. I know he could see us (we were on the couch like 10-12 feets away from the door) but he didn't even knock; he just started talking!

We have sign at the entrance to our neighborhood saying "No Solicitors" so that cuts down a little bit. But I never answer my door or even say anything if I don't know who is at the door. The good thing is any time there is a knock or doorbell ring our dog will bark (this is the only time we don't discourage barking). He's not very big and is a total sweetie pie, but his bark sounds pretty vicious so that helps me to feel secure when hubs isn't home.

I have a ghetto No Solicitors sign that is cut carelessly crooked. It has mostly helped deter the annoying solicitors.

I usually answer the door. I've only had one person get aggressive with me when I told him I didn't have any money. He really didn't believe me. I was telling the truth though. Our checks only have my husband's name on them so I can't sign them.

that's super sketchy. donations for college would have been nice, but I never would have gone door to door. who does that? keep your eye on the news for break-ins! haha

@autumnlove: Girl....this is why we got a no soliciting sign. It's cute and very small and not tacky. Since we put it up - no one has rung our doorbell except friends and the UPS man! I swear, people were at our door EVERY DAY. The dogs would go nuts, we would get annoyed, etc. We got it before the baby came so I wouldn't be bothered while I am at home for 3 months alone all day long.
My husband thinks people are knocking to scope out homes to rob.

I never answer, we have had a couple people use the college excuse as well (usually selling newspaper subscriptions or magazines.) DH will answer the door, but I always pretend not to be home even with the dog going crazy.
I hate when they are pushy, I have asked one that DH answered if he had a license from the city to be going door to door, and he walked away!

I hate solicitors, or jehovah witnesses. No offence to their religion, but I don't need to be recruited in my household.

I usually don't even answer the door!! I mute the TV and hunker down until they go away! Often it's just the mailman, hahaha. I only answer the door if I know who it is and I'm expecting them (like pizza delivery)!

@Mrs. Sunglasses: lol..there are few benefits to the fact that the ILs are Jehovah's Witnesses. One benefit is that no one comes to our door, and the other is that we don't have to worry about splitting holidays/birthdays because they don't celebrate any of them. Win!

I never answer the door for strangers unless it's ups/fedex. I immediately go into "omgitsaserialkiller" mode and mute the tv. My dad came to visit and answered the door for the Kirby salesman. Ughhh! They somehow edged their way in and were there for over an hour!!

We were house sitting for my parents recently, and DH answered the door. Some exterminater guy, and he was pissed when DH said he wasn't interested! Was was like, 'so you just don't care that ants could be eating your house right now? You don't care about your house?' and eventually DH said it wasn't his house, and the guy took a step back, looked DH up & down & said 'yeah, I didn't think you could really live here!' before walking away. Ooooo I flew off the couch ready to give him a piece of my mind! DH was all 'whatever he's a door to door pest inspector'. I'm still mad at that solicitor!

Watch out for them! That's what they have been doing around here to get a feel for when people are home and what they have inside so they know who to rob. Just yesterday morning another house was broken into across the street!
We have a no solicitors sign, but they ignore it. So, we ignore them when they knock on our door. I never open for them.
