LO is going to be 16 months at the end of this month and she still isn't walking. There is a possibility she has some hip issues but I'm not sure if that is related to her not walking or not. She will walk with her push walker but that's about the extent of it. Her pediatrician doesn't seem concerned that she isn't walking yet since he said it could be hip related, and she is still within a normal range but it still worries me sometimes. A lot of her friends are walking already, and some are a few months younger than her. If you had a late walker, (15 months+), when did they finally start walking?

yup! O is almost 15 months (on the 27th) and she will literally stretch like Elastigirl to reach things. no interest in walking. she will go all over with her stroller, will take 2-3 steps to you and launch herself, but no walking.
I have a feeling when she does she'll act like she always has! just taking her time.
sometimes, she'll walk holding my one hand, but goes in circles around me..hahaha. like she goes in the direction of the support.

My niece started walking at 17 months, and it was literally in a matter of days!

@hilsy85: I was going to ask about timeframes too, so was she walking around things one day and then just started full on walking?

@Bao: it was over 3 days or so--my sister left her with my mom while they went away over a long weekend and when she got back, my niece was walking!

Mine took her first steps at 14.5 months but wasn't really walking until 15 months.

Mine didn't walk until 16 months. She just stood up one day and walked halfway across the room at daycare. After that, she's been off and running and walking great - really no falls, tender steps, etc. She was just waiting until she was totally ready, I guess!
p.s. I had hip issues as a baby/toddler and didn't walk until I was over 2 years old. I've never had any issues at all in my childhood or adult life (except I'm very flexible, which isn't so bad). So, if there is a hip issue, it doesn't have to be a major worry-point

I'm glad to hear these stories! M is 14.5 months and not at all interested in walking. Several of her friends were really early walkers and it's making me just a little insecure. She crawls around and they use her head to push up on
. We go to a playgroup run by an OT and she's not worried at all because she moves around really well and crawls really well. She's guessing that when M does start walking it was be really fast and she will be really steady because all of her foundations are so strong. I didn't walk until 18 months and I'm a pretty good walker at 30

Our niece didn't walk on her own until 17/18 months. She knew how, she just needed the confidence! One day she just took off and was walking in less than a day.

@Bao: Funny, but true -- I didn't walk until 18 months. I am proud to say that at 26, I am a perfectly good walker and have run several marathons. My parents say that they would put me down and my legs would become jello. They ultimately decided that I just preferred to be held. Similarly, my niece pretended she couldn't walk around her parents but at daycare would walk perfectly fine. Some babies just want to be held - embrace it, because 6 months from now you'll be chasing her around and wishing she would crawl back into your arms!

My little guy didn't walk until just before 15 months but I think it was because he was a super fast crawler! When he did walk though, it wasn't 3-4 tentative steps, it was 8-10 feet. The next day he walked across the house. Prior to that he rarely even attempted to walk or take steps.

DS is just starting to take steps at 17 months.

Late walker here too. He started taking steps right before Thanksgiving (14.5 months) but he still has very little interest in actually walking...at least not without the push toy! He qualified for EI physical therapy a few months ago because he was a very late crawler (12.5 months) but the therapist met with us and basically said there's nothing wrong, he's just stubborn and doesn't want to do it yet. I don't want to push him too hard, but he is 28 lbs and my back is killing me:(

@Bao: DS started taking a few steps the week of Thanksgiving (16.5 months). Today at 17 months 1 week and 3 weeks after first steps, he can take about 15 steps at a time now. His steps are very purposeful and cautious which I expect is because he is walking so late and has had a lot of time to think about it!

I didn't start walking until I was 16 months. Apparently I was a perfectionist back then too & didn't do anything until I could do it right. Try not to worry!

My nephew just started walking at 17 months and within a week was running all over the place!

@Bao: My daughter didn't walk until she was nearly 17 months old. She had some issues putting her feet flat on the floor when she was around 8 months, and she scooted on her butt before she crawled. We took her to the chiropractor for her feet, and she was wonderful in reassuring me that everything felt normal with her bone structure, just a bit tight in the hips. It stressed me out a bit, but once she started walking she was super stable. She was running 2 weeks after she started walking.

this is reassuring! I have suspected that my LO just is cautious too - when she does let go of something she can stand and squat with a toy pretty easily. I think she's gonna surprise me one day by just walking to something, lol.

My LO is over 15 months and I'm starting to get antsy even though I don't think there is any problem. He's just really stubborn and a really good crawler. Anyone else trying to patiently wait?

@Mrs Green Grass: my LO didn't walk until just around 16 months! once she was off, she was OFF though. she waited til she was totally confident.
edit: she started walking the day before her 15month visit, but only once in awhile and only if she REALLY wanted something. She flipped a switch and was super confident 2 weeks later.
