We use a lot of the standard brushes, conditioners and detanglers. But despite all that, I was letting our daughter go to bed with a ponytail sometimes... and that was causing extra tangles. I stopped doing that, and things have gotten better.
Any other tips for preventing tangled hair?

What kind of conditioner have you tried? Have you tried a leave in?
Unfortunately, some people just have hair that's prone to knots...like me. When I was little, my mom would use a leave in from Nexxus I think. Now, I really like ABBA moisture scentsation conditioner (it smells so good).
I can only speak to professional products though--my mom's a hairdresser and I've never used drugstore brands on my hair.

I don't think brushes are generally good for hair that tangles. I use a pick for my hair because that's what works best (it also helps prevent frizz).

I second using a comb or pick instead of a brush. And a braid at bedtime rather than a ponytail.

@mrbee: you said you tried a pony tail but have you tried a braid? That's the only thing that keeps my nieces hair from tangling while she sleeps!

when my hair was super long and tangle-y when I was a kid I believe my mom would braid it (while wet) super tight before bed to help. Of course it was the 80s so crimps were cool anyway.

I have super tangle-y hair. Braids help during the day. I use a natural bristle boar brush starting at the bottom. Gently use your fingers starting at the bottom to pull apart knots. I use a heavy conditioner...

When I was a kid my mom would comb my hair for me right after a bath/shower. I also wore my hair in a braid or braids to bed. I had very long hair as a kid, so it got tangled pretty easily... cutting hair a bit shorter can make it easier to manage.

My mother's solution was to cut it short, a la Dorothy Hamill's bowl cut...now I have really aged myself.

My mom used to braid my hair every night before bed to prevent tangles. My hair was about halfway down my back until I was around 9.

@Adira: Agreed, I realized that brushing my hair wet (or with any spray product) was tearing it up. Getting a wide-toothed comb meant for wet hair/detangling and starting closer to the ends right after a shower helped so much.

Oh yes, to the wide tooth comb too! (while wet... actually in the shower while the conditioner is still in it!)

@spaniellove I still do it as a grown up, it was life changing as a kid! My mom knew the good tricks though cause she has curly hair and her mom tortured her by brushing it as a kid!
