Hey! I'm an unmarried British Bee living in the US! Where are you moving to?We had also originally planned to go back to England for the birth.

Basically, even with insurance, there is usually a portion that you will need to pay out of pocket. For my c section delivery, I paid $5000, my out of pocket max and the insurance paid $30000. No NHS here!
If you are not married, any decisions regarding your emergency care will default to your parents unless you sign a medical power of attorney, giving your partner the right to make decisions regarding your care....this means do not resuscitate, etc. it's a good idea to talk this over in advance so everyone is on the same page. Once I signed mine, and he was in the delivery room with me, he wasnt treated any different than if we were married, and when the c section was decided, he was in the operating room with me. He was also allowed to spend the night on a pull out bed in my room.

The baby automatically will be labeled with your last name throughout the paperwork and in the hospital. When the birth certificate is created, you have the option of using whichever name then. We went with my partners last name, so all official documents such as passport and birth certificate have my sons first name with my partners last name.
Insurance billing is an issue if you have different insurance to your son, but it sounds like this is not the case. It was with us.

Not every company provides insurance benefits to unmarried partners, although with the gay rights movement in this country, more companies are starting to offer domestic partner benefits. You should confirm with his company that they do cover unmarried partners. Usually you have to show proof that you've been living together for at least 2 years. Bank statements and utility bills.

Are you American? Are you coming in on an assignment? If you're coming in on an assignment, see if you can get Home Terms in your contract, which is basically insurance coverage similar to what you have in yout home country.

Also engaged and also due in June! We haven't encountered any problems due to being currently unmarried. We plan on baby have FI's last time, as early as possible. I was unfamiliar that the use mother's maiden in the hospital, very interesting!

@jaclyn: that's great! It's good that his company is involved and supportive. Mine is fairly large so they were hands off. Even though my SOs plan will cover me, it's cost prohibitive to do so. It sounds like his company is going to take care of all those details though.

I can't really think of anything else. It all went pretty smoothly. I think the only person who realized we weren't married was the person at the registration desk. Everyone else just kept calling him my husband, and we never bothered to correct them.
