Hi All
DH and I are TTC our first child and we're using this time to get all our ducks in a row, as the saying goes!
Financially, we're doing a lot better than most of our friends in that we own our own home and are not in any debt - but we hardly have any savings now (we spent them on the wedding and deposit for the house earlier this year). We're comfortable at the moment - but we need both of our full time incomes to cover the bills and the mortgage....
I get 3 months fully paid maternity leave, which goes down to half pay for the next three months. Realistically, I need to be going back to work when future LO is about four months old.... but.....
1) Wow, how expensive is childcare?!! It works out to about £700 a month!! That's more than my mortgage!! We simply cannot spare that much.
AND
2) I can't bear the thought of it! I want to be with my LO and watch him/her grow. If I go back to work, I wont get in until 6pm - so I'll only get about an hour a day with my LO before bed time.
Potential Solution:
Yesterday, I discovered that my employer has a working-from-home policy that enables staff to request to work permanently from home if you have to care for a relative or a child. My dad is really sick at the moment and so I've agreed with my manager a month's trial period in which I'll work from home 3 days a week and from the office 2 days a week. I'm going to work like a demon this month and show that I'm 200% more productive from home - then I'm going to request to make the permanent change....
If I worked from home for 3 days per week, my mum could have my future LO for 2 days per week and, in return, we'd pay her the going rate for 2 days, which is just enough to top up her pension so that she can finally retire!
Sounds like a perfect solution, right? But now I need to run this by you Bees and ask - is it doable? Being a mum is a full time job anyway - could you combine it with another full time job 3 days a week?? It will mostly involve email correspondence, writing reports, strategies etc. I will have to make some phone calls but I can save them for my two office days...
Any advice/stories gratefully appreciated - we're still weighing up our options! Thank you!
How is it that so many of our friends who earn much less money than us can afford it?? (I'm getting myself all upset! Pull yourself together woman!).
