Are there any certified nursing assistants on Hellobee? DH is considering becoming one and we'd love to hear more about the job from someone in it.

My mother was for a little bit. It doesn't pay well and it's a lot of cleaning up after the residents, giving them baths, dressing them, powdering them, etc. Lifting them into their wheelchairs...she worked in an alheizmers ward and many would bite or kick at her.

He's interested in the job because he really likes working with older people. He likes them and they LOVE him. He's very friendly, social, so he thinks he would be good at it.
He's a translator but there just aren't enough jobs in that field right now.

I'm an RN... Perhaps he could shadow a CNA for a day and see how he likes it? It is a tough job, but an honorable one. There are CNAs in many settings too, besides gerontology (or nursing homes). Hospitals use CNA's in all their units, but for something like pediatrics or other specialties, he might need a different kind of training... I'm not too sure. I'm also not sure how the job market is these days for CNA's but I assume you've already done some research and have found some opportunities? Good luck!

I worked as a CNA at a nursing home during college. It's definitely a tough job, both physically and emotionally, but there is definitely a need for people who do it because they really care. In a nursing home, it's mainly changing diapers, showerig people, helping them get dressed & ready for the day or ready for bed, and feeding. I had some residents I really loved, but that makes it extra hard when they pass away. I would definitely second the idea of shadowing a CNA in the setting he is interested in for a full shift or two.
