We have been dealing with jaundice since H was 4 days old. She is 4 weeks tomorrow. Her levels have been super high (21) and then down low after being on the Bili lights for 3 days in the Peds unit, then they have crept up since then....I even had to stop BFing because her dr wanted to make a diagnosis of "Breast Milk Jaundice" which is when something in the breastmilk keeps her liver from breaking down bilirubin. Her levels went down. Then we had to start BFing again, which was drama in itself, as she got lazy and had Nipple Confusion, but I Bf'd her constantly for a couple of days and she was latching on again...After all of that, her levels have continued to go up and have leveled off around 14. It's just not going down. So today, her Ped did a urine test to rule out a bladder infection, and they had to put a CATHETER in her to get her urine sample. Then we had to get her foot punctured (probably for the 20th time!) to check her Bili levels right after, and I cried the whole way home that she is so tiny and has been through so much! It's not fair! I know that sounds so ridiculous, but I'm so tired of watching her sweet little self go through all of this!
We are going to formula AGAIN for 72 hours. I love BFing and I'm all for it, but this baby has been through ENOUGH and this may truly be a case of a situation where Breast is NOT the best for her. And last time I was really upset about it, but I never expected this to go on this long. So now I'm at a point where I really don't care if I can't BF her anymore. I just want out of this Bilirubin Nightmare.
So we have to see what Thursday's test brings. And if it's not down a significant amount, like under 10, then we are getting referred to a Gastro. For MORE testing and poking and prodding and dr's appointments.
I know many of you have had jaundice babies...Has anyone had "persistent jaundice" where this PITA will NOT go away???
Sorry for the rant! Today was super stressful for Dh and I both! I think I'm going to really hit the wine tonight!
My heart just BREAKS for my little yellow princess baby!!! Her color is worse in the past couple of days, you can see here:
