The piggly wiggly thread I started made me wonder if anyone else is going to HHI this summer. We are going in mid-may.

Nope, we went once many years ago because the Ils rented a beach house. It was mainly because it was very convenient for BIL and his family at the time. They just had a baby. It was a bit of a pain for us to get to. We ended up driving. I doubt we'll be back.

I am 99% sure we are. Need to find a Marriott Vacation Club that we can drive too. Not paying and using points so we just have to find out when we are able to go. I think we are going to ask my parents if they want to go and stick R's PnP in a closet!

@Smurfette: Is there one in Sea Pines? I feel like there is one called the Monarch? That place is supposed to be great; we used to always get a condo in Sea Pines and the main Sea Pines beach access is right beside it.
This year we are not staying in a plantation; nothing in SP that was affordable was anywhere near the beach. When I was a kid we would bike to the beach with three toddlers. I'd be down for biking, but being pregnant biking scares me! Maybe another year!

@locavore_mama: that would be a miserable trek! Especially considering you'd pass so many other comparable beaches on the way!

@Mrs. Pen: Hilton Head Island
@Mrs. Sketchbook: That is the one a friend recommended (Monarch) I don't know the areas very well. We went as kids every summer. But DH and I prefer Destin but no vacation club's there.

@Smurfette: Ahhh that's what I thought but I wasn't sure. Is it as great as everyone says it is?

@Mrs. Pen: I like it better then Myrtle Beach but I would prefer the Gulf beaches. I haven't been to HHI in 5 years now.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: haha exactly!!! Not very convenient for us. It's a great area for a vacation if it's nearby.

@Mrs. Pen: Hilton Head Island. Just a beach island on the GA/SC coast that for some reason is popular with people in various parts of the country...maybe it is easy for people in the midwest to get to? It is the shortest distance to the beach from my house, not including the gulf.

@Smurfette: We go with the IL's to SGI every year, which is in a secluded part of the gulf coast, and it is fantastic! We do that in August. I used to live in AL and we went to Gulf Shores quite a bit back in those days. I've never been to Destin but I'd love to! Everyone's pictures have such pretty blue water. I'm really desperate to try Grayton Beach but the cost is just too prohibitive; I think that area is really trendy right now so the prices have shot up.
My parents are huge marriott people. My dad travels a lot and gets tons of points. They just got back from staying at a marriott club in west palm beach.....color me jealous!

@Mrs. Pen: not worth the trek for you and it can be pretty pricey if you stay on the plantations.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: yeah DH travels Mon-Thur every week. So at least there are some perks. We went to St Thomas and stayed at the Ritz! All we had to pay was our food and activities.
We were going to go to SGI this summer with my whole family, but are waiting till next summer now. Which is why DH and I said HHI, save the money!

Probably not until September, my IL's live nearby!
ETA- we've done the Marriott area (my SIL's family stayed there), it was really nice with a huge pool and splash pad and was next to a gorgeous stretch of beach.
Another favorite area is Coligny, lots of great beach combing and shops.

@Mrs. Pen: It depends on what you want out of your experience. Building is very controlled, so there aren't a lot of options for staying directly on the beach unless you stay in a highrise (there are only a few, they tend to be more expensive, and sometimes don't accommodate families as well as a condo would). So usually there is some walking involved. But it is very shady with very well-developed bike paths so the walks are usually ok. Other downsides: the sand isn't powdery and the water is usually pretty murky. But I kinda like the wildness of the Atlantic and like to go every so often to see that. And I like that there are lots of rules in place about colors, building size, signage, so it doesn't feel terribly commercial, although it is extremely popular. Plus it is a 30 minute drive from Savannah for daytrips. There are other islands, like Fripp and Harbour and Tybee that I'd like to try, but HHI is a lot cheaper.
The food is ok, but food on the gulf is much better IMO! Atlantic shrimp are skinny! Gulf shrimp are fatties!
But definitely, for clear water, white sand, blue water, and an ocean view, the gulf is your best bet unless you can go further south! My husband refuses to drive more than about 7 hours, lol!

@locavore_mama: I think a lot of midwesterners go to HHI, I dunno why, maybe the way the interstates are laid out, it is the closest beach to them. You probably remember the ultra-popular bumper sticker with OHIO spelled out with the I that looks like the lighthouse at Sea Pines, lol! But yeah, from Minnesota, seems like it might just be cheaper to fly to FL.

@Smurfette: I love SGI! It is super isolated, but really so pretty. We love Apalachicola, so many good restaurants!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I loooove the off season and avoiding the crowds!
Even more than HHI, I love Kiawah Island near Charleston, SC. My husband's family does vacations there every few years, so I have super fond memories of the area.

@lemondrop: I have heard a lot of good things about that area! I have heard that it is like HHI "used to be," before it got so busy (I've been going since middle school and it is amazing how busy it has gotten). I would really love to stay on Folly. I used to have friends who lived in Charleston that I would visit occasionally and I loved going to the beach there, it feels so old-fashioned.
