I just tuned in to Dateline - it's about 2 women who had the wrong embryos transfered in a mixup at their IVF clinic. Crazy stuff - both these women are so strong! I can't imagine what I would do in that situation.

I missed the first part about how they found out, but one of the woman's transfers was successful. She decided to carry the baby for the other couple and at the same time found a surrogate to carry her extra embryo, since by the time she gave birth to the other couple's baby she would be 42 and likely too old to carry her own child.
However just 8 days after she gave birth to the baby and handed it over to the other couple, her surrogate miscarried
It looks like both families have a close relationship though! I am in awe!

It's crazy! Just watched it. Glad everything worried out in the end for them!

I missed the first part and was trying to watch it on their website. The second mother ended up with a baby boy it looked like, how did that occur?

@kentuckygirl: spoiler alert to anyone still watching!
The savages (couple who were accidentally impregnated with the other couples embryo) carried the baby to term and then gave him to his biological parents (m-something, forget their last name). Eventually the savages surrogate did carry a twin pregnancy to term so they have five kids now.
I don't know what happened with the m family though- I got the impression that they couldn't try again and that embryo was their last chance.
I just can't imagine how the mom who carried the wrong baby did it. She wanted her own baby so badly then she had to carry someone else's to term. Amazing. I hope the fertility clinic paid for the surrogacy.

This is exactly why my RE's office had different staff members ask me my name multiple times during my IUI and IVF procedures. I even had to carry my DH's washed sample from the lab window to the room for my IUI after personally checking the ID number and name on the tube. There was no excuse for this. Their last names may have been the same but their first names are different.

@swedishfish: there was something in the prologue for the book about a birthday being two years off too!

@Foodnerd81: I hope this RE is not in business anymore. My former gyno's office had another patient with the same first and last names as me and they asked me my birthday and mother's name every time I called them.

It sounded like they took the wrong couple's embryos out of storage, and the second couple wasn't even doing a transfer at the time. DH and I have sort of joked about having the wrong embryo transferred before, but we were really horrified to see that this actually happens. Something I kept wondering was why they didn't tell the couple until it came time to tell them the results of the beta test, 10 days after transfer- surely they must have noticed their mistake before then. Would they have just not told her if she weren't pregnant? Because that would be so messed up.

@swedishfish: I was a little weirded out that the nurse at my RE's office came to the IUI room holding a sample marked with DH's info (that it could have been anybody's really). But when I thought about it, they only handle one couple at a time and won't handle another sample until the previous couple is finished with their IUI and has left.
