My ob stopped taking gyn patients, so I just see my gp for everything. Since we don't plan on having any more kids, I probably don't need an obgyn and can just see my gp for everything?
What about you?

I'm the reverse actually - I have an obgyn but no GP! I think as long as your GP does the women's health stuff, it's probably fine.

@Beehive: i used to only have ab ob and no gp for years. but once my ob stopped doing gyn, i just looked for a gp to make it easier.

I didn't have an obgyn until I was like 26. It wasn't until I was pregnant I got an obgyn, if I was sick I just went to a clinic...I still don't even have a gp--probably should get one though!

I didn't get an obgyn until I got pregnant, so before that I just used my gp. Now I have both!

Nope, no obgyn here. In my city, at least, it's common to just see a gp unless you've got a problem (for standard checks, etc). And since I used a midwife for LO... I've never had an obgyn!

Can your GP do annual pap smears? That's the only thing I would worry about!

I've only ever seen an OB for my first pregnancy. I see my GP for everything else including my yearly physical + pap.

@locavore_mama: yup she does. she is really great and leans more holistic, which i like!

It's usually the reverse for me. I always have a GYN but not a gp. Does your gp do pap smears?
Right now I don't have either and I need them both.

@mrsjazz: me too. i've always had obgyns and no gp. but i found a gp that i love and she does pap smears so i don't think i will ever need an obgyn again.

I have a GP. When I was pregnant I saw a MW/CNP. I got my last pap smear from the CNP.
I had a wonderful OBGYN when I lived in Philly. One of my few regrets about leaving the city was that she wouldn't be the one to delivery my babies!

@locavore_mama: I think most do! My family practitioner does all encompassing medicine - she is my sons "pediatrician" as well as my doctor.
I don't have an ob either- just a gp!

My OB moved, and is now teaching university. I'm back to seeing my beloved GP, who is now back from a leave of absense and in remission from breast cancer.

@Mrs. Bee: Interesting! I should combine/look for a new doc since I hate both my current GP and OBGYN. Does your doc also do mammograms for later?

I didn't for the longest time, until I had trouble TTC and was referred to a ob first, and then the ob will probably refer me to an RE soon.

@Andrea: hmmm not sure. i will ask her as i'm due for an appt soon!

I see a family practice doc, and he saw me throughout my pregnancy, I love him! I will be so sad when he PCS's next summer

When I lived in PA, I had a GYN (she didn't do any OB) and then, when she moved away, an OB/GYN. My GP there didn't do Pap smears, which I guess is pretty common in that area. Otherwise, I've always seen my GP for routine stuff and I love the convenience. However, since the MW group I'm going to for prenatal/birth stuff now is totally awesome, I might use them for routine stuff in the future so I have an excuse to go back and visit them

Not at the moment. I'm not really comfortable going back to the OB who delivered my baby... Nothing that happened was her fault, but it was just such scary experience I'd prefer a new start.

I'm such a prude. I don't want a gp looking at my lady parts. I just want a lady parts doctor looking at them!!! Once someone looks down there, I can never look at them the same!!! What's wrong with having two separate doctors?
persimmon / 1128 posts
I have always had a PCP and an OB/GYN. I saw my OB/GYN for years - even when I thought I was done having babies - because I guess it makes me feel more comfortable knowing that he specializes in lady part related issues.

I had just an obgyn for years, then I stopped seeing her after my first m/c. Now I just have an ND who does yearly checkups among other things.

I've actually never had an obgyn, or ob. My gp did everything, even delivery
nectarine / 2163 posts
I've just got a GP. I've never been to on obgyn. here it's typical to just see a GP for everything. even LO goes to the same GP, not a pediatrician.

I used to have a gp do everything (back when I was in college), but I realized he sucked at Pap smears after I had my first gyn appointment (at 23)! I didn't know they weren't supposed to hurt!

I have a gp that I go to when I am sick during the week - if its the weekend I go to a minute clinic or something similar. I LOVE my ob/gyn though and would prefer to just go to her. "most" of my issues are women related anyway so she always helps me
papaya / 10570 posts
@Mrs. Bee: We don't have them in the UK unless there's a specific problem - then you are referred to the hospital, where you see whichever Gynecologist is on duty that day until the problem is solved and you are discharged.
The GP's practice nurse deals with smear tests etc, any female concerns that might require examination are dealt with by the STD clinic (yes, that's right! If I get thrush I have to go to the clap clinic and sit in the public waiting room...) and pregnancy related issues are dealt with by midwives (unless you are high risk).
