I know the max you can get for iphone 5 is $200, I'm just wondering how strict they are about the condition of the phones to give you that max trade-in value.

@snowjewelz: pretty strict I think. I've had friends who were better off selling online. My friend that got 200$ had her phone in a life proof case and her phone was in mint condition

@mrsjyw: Thanks for letting me know! I was afraid they're strict; so now I don't want to bank of getting the max value to get the new iphone for free!

My sister tried trading in a phone with a cracked screen. They said no.

@snowjewelz: we traded in a iphone 4s and it had a slight chip but no cracks on the screen and all ports worked. They gave me $200 for the phone but in an e gift card. Ugh like I'm not going to loose the email in the shuffle

@snowjewelz: i think you can bring it to the VZ store and they can tell if you if you can get the max value. If you dont i have seen people sell it on Ebay and people have paid more than 200 for a used phone.

I know this is an old thread, but I stopped into a local sprint store to see what I could get. My iphone 5 is physically in pretty good condition, there is one very minor little ding near the top corner - and that was enough for them to take it from the max $200 trade-in to $86... but honestly, my phone being two years old and having a crappy battery - I think it's more than what I'd get for it online.
But yes, I'd say they're pretty strict about the condition. Never hurts to bring it in and just check.

For the Verizon trade in it just asked if it had any cracks in the screen and if it powered up.

I thought they were strict too...when I mailed in my phone for the trade-in it was estimated that I would only get $75 back (back of phone was cracked but otherwise perfectly functioning...4s). And that $75 included some special doubling value promo they were running. Well to my surprise I just got an email with a $200 Verizon gift card! Whaaaaaat? I've never heard of anyone getting MORE money back than what was quoted to them....

Verizon was super lax with us. Got $150 for a shattered 4S and $100 for a 4!

I just got $200 for mine. Mine was physically in good shape (no cracks) but had some scratches. I was a little worried because I had been having some trouble getting it to work (it would sometimes freeze and act weird or just shut down out of the blue) but I guess it was good enough for the full promo value.

Verizon was pretty lax with our phones! They never really checked them (and they had all our phones to do transfers too). We all got the full $200 value that was offered, provided nothing really was wrong with our phones anyway.

They were pretty strict. The salesguy checked it over pretty thoroughly. Mine was in very good condition though - kept in a case from the very beginning, very few Knicks or scratches - and I got the full 200$.

How does this work with Verizon? You take your phone into the store when you are making a new purchase? Do they credit the trade-in toward your new purchase?
I might be needing a new phone and anything I can do to offset the cost would be helpful.
