I have used all kinds, including the spray booths (some are better than others, but it really comes down to how good you are at positioning yourself and applying the blocking lotion) and the salon airbrush type. For home use, I like the Jergens Natural Glow lotion, for a gradual, almost-mistake-proof plan. I also like the L'Oreal Sublime Glow (the towelettes), for its ease and even coverage (gives pretty color, too). I have also used Fake Bake lotion, which gave intense, but realistic, color. Although unless you are a seasoned pro at applying lotion, I would not recommend Fake Bake, as practice is definitely a prerequisite for this one.

I use L'oreal Sublime Bronze lotion and I love it, you just have to make sure it is rubbed in well but it gives a nice color!

As an aside, after I do my body (I omit my feet/ankles and repeatedly wash my hands during the application process), I go back and add self-tanner to the tops of my feet/ankles and the back of my hands with a makeup sponge. It makes it so much easier to avoid splotchines (esp. on feet, b/c you can avoid any dry areas, as they pick up more color and will look darker).
