I'm teaching Great Gatsby to my grade 12 English class and while I'm enjoying this time around, I remember my very own grade 12 class and hating it. Is the new version of the movie any good?

I really like the new version of the movie. But I'm not sure how close to the actual book it is

If you want something close to the book stay far far away from this movie. I HATED the changes they made. They put nick carraway in a mental institution for his narration, which is out of nowhere, and they leave out Gatsbys father attending his funeral, which is IMHO one of the more important parts of the book. I reread the book the week I saw the movie because it's one of my all time favorites, and I'm so sad I did. Leo makes a great gatsby (see what i did there?) but that is literally the only redeeming quality of this movie.

I enjoyed it and Baz Luhrmann isn't usually my style at all. I think your students would enjoy it and there is Leo for the ladies.

There are discrepancies, definitely, like the funeral thing. Could be food for discussion, though, and make students actually read. Parts are a bit risque for school, if I'm not mistaken.

I tried to start watching this last night, actually! I fell asleep pretty soon into it because I'd been traveling all day, but one thing that kept distracting me from being able to really get into it was that Leo is soooo handsome and looks young in the movie, and the woman that he's so obsessed with just looked older and not like anyone you'd see on his arm. Maybe that's dumb but I had a hard time believing in that match?

I enjoyed reading Gatsby in high school and college, and I actually liked the new movie. BUT, I love Leo + Baz Luhrmann.

I never read the book but loved this movie. I didn't know much about the movie before either and remember thinking it reminded of Romeo and Juliet with Leo (which I loved!) then later found out about Baz Lurrmann and made the connection.
