I'm in Massachusetts and according to this morning's weather, it looks less and less likely it'll come anywhere near here. Looks more like it'll make landfall around Maryland/New Jersey. I guess it's up in the air at this point. Any other New England bees worried or not giving it a thought?

i'm in virginia, and though it looks likes we'll only be getting the outskirts, i'm worried about the amount of rainfall. we live in a flood zone and don't have renter's insurance... eek!

I'm really worried! I'm in NJ, across the river from NYC, but the real issues is that I'm due on Sunday and delivering at t NYC hospital! I'm hoping they're making a bigger deal out of it than it will be. My inlaws are begging us to check into a hotel near the hospital for the duration of the storm, but I will really go stir crazy stuck in a hotel room.

We're a bit worried since our house was flooded by Irene. We had to evacuate and lost power for days. This doesn't seem like it will be as bad. Hope not. I'd rather not have to deal with all of that again ... and while pregnant.
@Tidybee: my first thought was that maybe you should check into a hotel!

@photojane: I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure most home insurance policies don't cover flooding anyway. Not that that helps much.
I'm not worried. I was all freaked out about Irene and it was NOTHING where I was. Like, some rain and a few small branches down. I'm thinking it won't be a big deal, but if it seems kind of bad, I will work from home. My dog gets freaked out in thunderstorms so it would be good to be home for him anyway.

Right now, Sandy is blowing by me in East Coast Florida, but really its been nothing to write home about- schools have been out since yesterday and at the moment the sun is out!
However, Monday we leave on a road trip to Upstate, NY and I fear I will be driving into the remains of a lot of devastation or into the middle of it depending on when and where it makes landfall. Hoping the weather channel has some clearer models soon!

I'm not worried -- more excited. I love a big storm, but I might feel differently if flooding was a concern for us. It looks like the storm may hit us in Upstate New York, but by the time it gets here I'm assuming it won't be all that severe.

I am def worried esp since I'm traveling for work on Monday. I don't want to be stranded in NOLA and not see my baby. SIGH!

I'm in South NJ, and usually try not to worry about storms but have given up and am stocking up for this. We've seen people flooded, without power for weeks too many times in the past year or two so we're going to be prepared this time.

@Foodnerd81: we submitted a claim with Irene and got it approved just with our regular home insurance.

I'm a little bit worried but we live far enough from the coast that I'm not worried about a storm surge and we're about 10 miles away from the Susquehanna River so I'm not worried about flooding. I'm mostly concerned about the wind knocking down trees and/or powerlines and losing power (and thus losing all the stuff in my newly stocked freezer (including a dozen bags of breast milk).
Overall not terribly concerned, though. I lived in NOLA for a decade until Hurricane Katrina forced me to relocate, so I'm pretty confident in my preparation abilities.

I'm in MA also and I'm thinking we should stock up on some stuff in case we get house bound. My area also floods a lot, though where my house is should be fine. DH is supposed to fly out for a conference on Monday, I'm wondering what's going to happen with that.

I live in Seattle so I haven't heard anything but I do have family that live near Philadelphia. How bad is it suppose to be?
I wasn't there for Irene.
I was living in PA back when Hurricane Floyd hit us. It was just a lot of rain and I got out of school early because part of high school flooded.
How has Sandy and Irene compared to Floyd?

I'm in a Philadelphia suburb and am half excited (bc i like storms) but half nervous bc we have a creek behind our house and alot of waterways on my route to work. Irene was majorly hyped up here but we did have some pretty bad area flooding and power outages. The scary part was when there were tornado warnings over my house. Normally the creek isn't an issue bc its pretty far behind my house and we have a big yard but 10 inches of rain could potentially be very bad for this area. Just have to wait and see I guess.

We're in Pittsburgh, and we're bracing from the worst. Depending on what news channel you watch or what weather channel you tune into, we're getting anywhere from 1-2 feet of snow OR 8-10" of rain OR just a drizzly, blustery day. No one can seem to agree on what will happen!
We prepared an emergency kit in case we are snowed in, and Papa Jumper is buying a generator tonight.
Regardless of the precipitation, the winds will be strong enough that a power outage is pretty imminent.

@bluestriped bee: From what I've read so far it has POTENTIAL to be one for the record books. The combination of Sandy and these two other weather systems is apparently very rare and could bring serious winds, rain and snow depending where you live. Of course it could change like all weather but the models are not looking too good. It also could last for several days over a large area mainly New Jersey, PA and NY. It's just a waiting game to see what happens.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: We bought a small generator too. Not enough to power our whole house; just to charge a few electronics at a time because um, we can't live without technology. It seems like a given now that NJ is going to get hit, so I'm counting on losing power!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: hope you guys can get a generator. Apparently alot of places have already sold out here. After Irene people probably heard about this storm and bought them all up right away. We don't have one but I plan on picking up some matches and maybe a few bags of ice this weekend just in case.
We lost power for a few days last time but it was over a weekend so it wasn't too bad. Good luck to you! -

I live nowhere near a coast, so I don't often catch the names of the storms coming in until they are here and the news is talking about it so every time I see this thread pop up I keep thinking
"Who is Sandy?"
I will be thinking about all of you. I hope it passes quickly without too much damage.

Now I'm actually getting a little tiny bit excited, because, selfishly, I will be fine no matter what-- I live in the city, my apartment has never ever flooded, and the only time we lost power was when a humungous generator went up in flames. And we have tons of candles anyway. But unselfishly I hope it isn't a big deal. But you know how you always hear about all the babies being born 9 months after a hurricane? I'm hoping to have one of those I guess!

@spaniellove: i would say matches, candles, flashlights, batteries, extra water, non perishable food, car phone charger, gas if u have a generator, ice for coolers if your out of power for a while and want to keep some food, sandbags if you know your gonna flood... Etc. Last time we made sure all our electronics were charged up before we lost power especially phones and laptops so we could see what was going on.
It's looking like there may be no Halloween this year if this goes the way there saying time wise. Good thing I didn't buy any candy yet! I'll get a bag just in case of course.
Edit: make sure u have a manual can opener if u have gas and plan cooking anything bc we didn't think about that last time and only had an electric one with no electricity. Ha.

a little bit...i am in nyc. but i have heard that the lower barometric pressure the day before a storm can help induce labor for women close to their due dates, so that would be nice. but we have flashlights and candles leftover from Irene, and we'll probably start filling up some jugs with water tomorrow.

And I just learned that my hospital is in the first evacuation zone. Wonderful. This baby either needs to come tonight or next weekend!

I'm in the Philly suburbs too, definitely worried about trees going down (we lost one during Irene but it went alongside the house, thank goodness). Also worried about a power outage, I have probably close to 200 oz of BM in the freezer. I added jugs of water to the freezer to fill it to capacity and won't open it once the power goes out so we should get 48 hours at least. LO's daycare is closed tomorrow for sure so we will hunker down and see what happens. Hope everyone stays safe, especially you ladies about to give birth!

@Tidybee: last year my cousin's wife was past her due date with baby #2 when the hurricane caused all the flooding in Vermont. They were going to leave when baby #1 woke up from a nap, then their street flooded rapidly and they were stranded for days! They evacuated a few ppl near them by boat. We were terrified the baby would decide it was time, fortunately she went a few more days past due so she was able to get to the hospital. Moral of the story: floods are fast & unpredictable, hotel near the hospital is an excellent plan!!
Schools in our city have already been canceled for tomorrow. I am going to turn the temp down on my fridge to make things colder now in case the power goes out. Probably should have bought some more groceries, but not too worried. We live on the top floor of a 3 floor building, it would take a lot to flood us! I think power outages will be the biggest thing for us. We don't have trees near us either, so I'm not worried about any coming down on us.

I'm in point pleasant, nj - not too worried, maybe i should be since i am a mile from the beach? we are prepared though! the inlaws, who live 2 blocks from the beach, are under mandatory evacuation order and are spending the night here w/their dogs!

@chibee: So you aren't evacuated, only people closer to the beach?
Just got word that my office is closed, so I'm hunkering down here and doing some baking. I don't think I'll lose power but if I do, it will be nice to have some baked goods to snack on.

We are under mandatory evac but we are staying put! We left last year and could have prevented our basement from flooding so we don't want to leave again.
