In my region a lot of restaurants have Fish Fry Fridays year round. During Lent almost every single restaurant offers a fish fry on Friday and a lot of them through the week as well.
Every year we go on a mission to find the best fish fry!
Ours usually come with some kind of potato/macaroni salad and fries! They're usually regular or beer battered.
Are fish fries big where you are?

Surprisingly, they aren't down here where I live. It's a big Baptist area, though - do Baptists do Lent?
Up north where it was mostly catholic, they did..

@locavore_mama: We actually do have fish leftover from when my husband went deep sea fishing. We plan to go to the lake this weekend so we could easily bring the deep fryer... man oh man this pregnant lady is LOVING this idea.

Why am I baffled by this fish fry concept? I don't think our Catholic church did them when I was growing up at all...I would know, my father always helped with the Irish Dinner in March.

@locavore_mama: I am going to look around! I have to admit, growing up, we didn't eat out and I haven't lived in the area for at least 20 years!
The only official fish fry I know of is in Nassau, Bahamas, down the street from the British Colonial Hilton. lmao.

@mediagirl: Baptists don't do Lent, in general. However, we do have fish frys unrelated to Lent throughout the year! But that's more of a cultural thing

Yes but only during Lent. DH and I make a tour of them every year and have settled on 2 we really like so we tend to go to them more often.

@Weagle: that's true! I remember the guys at the first college I went to in NC LOVED fish frys. They would pull their friers out on the quad and cook up a ton of fish. It was good drinking food.

YES! And i'm so excited!!! There is a small town little hole in the wall bar that has the BEST fish (they do it year round but it's packed during Lent) and another church that has lines around the block and pretty much a party in line.

There are so many fish frys in the area this time of year that you can't escape the smell of fish on Fridays (which, I almost spelled Frydays).

I live in the PNW so in general, there are tons of seafood restaurants and I think most do a fish & chips special on Fridays. Yum. I'm still searching for the best fish tacos though...

I live in Wisconsin and most restaurants have fish frys every Friday, year-round. I grew up in Missouri, and they only had fish frys during lent.
@locavore_mama: The picture you posted is what most of the fish frys around here look like. Usually cod, perch, or walleye, choice of potato (fries, baked potato, potato casserole, etc), Cole slaw, bread and butter.

I'm confused. How is it different than fish and chips? Is it that restaurants don't normally serve it except during lent and on Fridays?? I so don't know anything about this fish fry thing. Lol

In terms of fish frys, they're huge in the Midwest, more Milwaukee than Chicago. I live for them. When I would visit my parents solo or pre-baby, I got excited to get in on a Friday night to have a fish fry. For the midwest, the fish fry is usually haddock, fries, and rye bread. I love the rye bread to it.

@mrskc: It depends upon where you go. In the Midwest, fish frys are common year round. Other cities and churches might only do them during Lent. For me, fish frys are a Friday thing growing up in Milwaukee. When I moved to Chicago, I noticed that most restaurants only do them during Lent.

@mrskc: HAHA same concept! We had fish & chips in London and it's pretty much the same! We just call it a fish fry around here. Also fish & chips is just battered fish and French fries. But fish fry usually comes with coleslaw, potato salad or macaroni salad as well with tartar sauce.

@locavore_mama: Rainbow Sprinkles doesn't? Hmm, my family is from the Bay Area so we know fish tacos. Anywhere that claims they have the best around here, are usually $20 for one taco and have been far from the best!

@cascademom: @locavore_mama: lol ok. I guess where I'm at (California) as far as I know we just call it fish and chips. And many places serve it up with coleslaw too. There are restaurants in my town that serve it 7 days a week and if you go to the coast many places have fish and chips on the menu.

Lots of restaurants add fish items to their menu during lent, but for actual fish fry, I only see them in much smaller towns (like where our shop is). I love it!! So yummy!!!

Nope but I live in the Bible Belt. The chick Fil a here is run by Catholics and they serve fish sandwiches during lent!

When I lived in AL, the sales team would do fish frys for customers a lot and once a year, they would come to the plant and do one for us. Yumm! They are not so common where I am now though a lot of restaurants serve fried fish w/ all the fixins.

No. But I grew up in the UK and fish and chips shops are a huge part of the culture all year round. It's quite common to pop to the chippy on a Friday. I miss it sooo bad!

In my hometown (Midwest)- yes, during Lent. Not sure if they're a thing where we are now (NE).
