We're going to have to hire a nanny for 5 months before DD2 starts daycare and when I return to work. I'm open to having a live-in nanny for this short period. However, DH is against it.
I do want someone here from 7/7:30 am - 7 pm, though. Do nannies work for that many hours? Is that overtime? Does it maybe make more sense to have a live-in?

@Andrea: There definitely are nannies that work that much! We know someone who has a nanny for 12 hours a day, and even more on Fridays. She is very well paid though.

@mrbee: yeah so I was thinking a live-in makes more financial sense but DH doesn't want the intrusion. Do you think a live-in would be cheaper? Of course I need to ask around...

@Andrea: Well live-ins often have a lower rate, but you have to pay for their food and other household expenses! Usually that involves ordering a lot of takeout.

I would think you would be able to find someone willing to do that.
I would also think about offering a drawer in the bathroom for an extra toothbrush and maybe a drawer in the spare bedroom for an extra outfit or something like that to make her feel more comfortable on those long days.

@Andrea: Ah that could be, I don't know! We had a baby nurse when we started Hellobee (since the site and Olive both came within a month of each other), and we bought her a lot of takeout and she didn't help with the cooking. But that's definitely different from a live-in...

I have a nanny that periodically works long hours like that. But a friend of mine has a live in who works a ton of hours, cooks and cleans. She's basically like a live in grandma and everyone loves the arrangement. Their house is set up so their nanny has a separate bedroom and bathroom in the basement, though. So they never feel like she's intruding.

@Mrs. Jacks: Yay! DH doesn't want a stranger in our house and neither do I but I think it would be really useful for the short term and I would be willing to deal with it. And she will definitely have her own space away from the main area of the house so I think it could work!
