I need to work on saying no! So does DH...
MIL says NO and gives LO a "look" when she wants her to stop throwing food or having a tantrum and it seems to work. I have a lot to learn!

I don't know if I would say I'm stern, but I'm not a pushover. Maybe I'm somewhere in the middle?

I thought I was until DD started approaching 3 ... I had to greatly improve my stern voice recently. Now I am much better at it!

We are having to be more stern, yes. It's difficult because we're trying to reward good behaviour and design age appropriate punishments, but the punishments are more difficult for my son to understand.

If I say no and give LO a look, she gives me a big smile and giggles. I still do it, and if/when she doesn't listen I stop her from what she's doing wrong. Like if she's throwing food on the floor I take her plate away from her.

Well, LO isn't here yet....and I know it can change when it's your own, but I have a feeling I'll be a fairly stern parent (when I need to be, not all the time!)...because I'm a teacher/librarian for a living, and have been for 10 years. That look is just part of my skill set with kids now.
I think DH will be a BIG softie though. He neverrrrrrr tells his neice and nephew no to anything.

I can definitely be stern but I need to work on being consistent. I get suckered by his cuteness!!

Yes, I am absolutely a stern parent! I make an effort to balance out the stern-ness with gentleness as much as possible... but with my goofy 3 year old you've just gotta be stern most of the time.

I am stern when I need to be, but I try to balance it with being a very patient mother. If he throws a tantrum, I will let him cry and settle down on his own. Afterwards we talk about what happened. If he does something wrong, I will go down to his level and explain to him the problem and the correct action. Only if he doesn't follow directions after the first warning will I bring out my stern voice, and he knows I mean business.

I am when I need to be. my husband is more stern than I am, though!

hah! LO bites me and shakes her head back and forth now (while NURSING) and when I try to unlatch her and say no she belly laughs at me.

I need to work on this big time with my 3 year old, she just doesn't listen to me and DH says it is because I'm too easy on her (he is much more stern and has no problems getting her to listen). DS is 7months and my sternness with him is developing, mainly when he bites/refuses to let go when nursing.

Yes, i'm very stern. It mostly works before she gets into trouble. I just give her a look and stare her down until she moves away from the electrical outlet! I used to raise my voice but DH said it bordered on yelling so i've stopped since.
But i think it's balanced since most of the time i let her be, let her run amok and make a mess. I'm stern when she's doing something dangerous or naughty.

Yes, there has to be a balance. I see too many preschoolers get away with things and are basically the ones in charge of their parents.
I'm going to be the mom that provides tough/gentle love to my child. hehe
