Charlie was playing with his old nanny today (now Olive's nanny) and he asked her, "Are you brown?" She laughed and said yes.
Later we asked him what color he is. He said, "Orange." We asked him what color Mommy was, and he said, "Orange"'; Daddy is also orange. We asked what color his other friends were, but he said, "I don't know."
I thought it was interesting that he's become more aware that different people can be different colors. He's 2 1/2 now (30 months) so it's taken him a while to bring it up in conversation. But I know he's aware of it, because if he sees someone who looks like a friend of ours, he will ask if it's her (she's Tibetan)... and if he sees someone that looks like his old nanny, he will ask if it's her (she is from St. Lucia).
But today is the first day that he asked someone about the color of their skin. We'll follow up by getting a book about different people from around the world, and I'll do some research into talking to kids about race.
Is your LO aware of race? How old were they when they first brought it up?
