Are you ever embarrassed of how your LOs act?

Today has been one of those days where everyone is overtired, whiny and uncooperative. Of course my parents decided to stop by and they looked horrified at how impolite and wild the kids were :meh:

I know there are many reasons as to why they're so crazy right now (no one slept well last night and it's nap time mostly) but I can't really explain that to anyone. I hate being embarrassed of how they're behaving! I love them dearly and I wish my parents could see them how I do.

Anyone else ever feel this way?!

um, yeah. like when my 2.5 year old was at our friend's house and (1) threw a tantrum because i didn't let him go downstairs (he knows they have toys down there) and (2) pushed and hit their daughter when she tried to enter the playhouse where he was standing--yeah, her playhouse.

Not too often because C usually saves her whiniest most annoying moments for home- lucky me? But yeah it happens. Generally I assume people either are parents too and they get it, or they have no idea and screw them.

I definitely feel this way sometimes. And then I feel guilty for being embarrassed, so it's pretty much a downward spiral. It's especially challenging for me right now because we recently moved to a new city, so we are meeting tons of new people, neighbors, etc., and it is absolutely mortifying to me when my 3 year old throws a huge fit, has a potty accident, etc., in front of people who don't know us well. For me, it is really hard to parent in front of new people. Super stressful.

Yes, most recently my LO has starting yelling "dinner! dinner!" in a really loud voice over and over again as soon as we sit down in a restaurant (even if we're there for lunch). It usually starts before we even have a chance to order. Super embarrassing.

@Me3: yes! I feel so guilty because I shouldn't feel embarrassed...they're just kids and I know they aren't brats. Part of me, feels like it's a reflection of my parenting so I'm mad at myself a little too.

Yes, when LO1 won't share the playground. Example: she goes down the slide and sees another kid wants to go down the slide. She will stay sitting at the bottom of the slide and will refuse to move. The parent of the kid is usually there, so it's so embarrassing when she won't listen to me while the kid is just waiting.

Definitely! The other day she ran up to her friend and told her she didn't want to see her, she wanted to see her other friend because she was her favourite. That was pretty bad. Mostly she saves the really bad stuff for home though. Touch wood!

Oh every time she throws a tantrum in public, I'm like nervous giggling saying "who's kid is that?" inside I'm mortified!

Yes, of course! For awhile LO loved to tell people "bye" but not in a cute way when they were leaving. I think she was telling them bye so that they WOULD LEAVE. I was mortified!!!

Like the time when I was crouching down for a box of macaroni while DD pounced on my back and attempted to climb on my shoulders ... and I didn't wear a belt so my pants were falling down. The people in the aisle ignored what they were looking for because they were slightly mortified for me

Yes, definitely. Like the time my little angel just marched up to another little toddler at a party and slapped her in the face. No provocation, no reason. And my LO is never agressive! It was so bizarre and random and embarrassing.

ALL THE TIME! You are not alone! I think I get easily embarrassed though. I also hear you about wanting people to see LOs they way we see them.

@sunny: haha LO does this on phone calls! We are one the phone with someone and he will say he wants to talk to that person and then he says bye and hits the red button! He does this because he actually wanted our attention. We have to call back the people and say sorry... of course they think it's cute but we are totally embarrassed by it!

Yes, especially at restaurants. I LOVE LOVE eating out but my 2 year old does not. She's not a foodie either and can't be bribed with food. I really love eating out by myself now. LOL

Meh, I don't think too much about it to be embarrassed. My DD is 16 months and her outbursts and behavior are developmentally normal so I don't really see the need to feel embarrassed by it. People in public are not as understanding of kids as they should be, but that's their problem not mine.

@catomd00: it's more of when my 3 year old says, "don't talk to me" or my 6 year old doesn't say hello to my parents or ignores them (again, this was right before naps after a night of hardly any sleep)

Sometimes, but I think she's overall well behaved so when she has her moments I figure other parents understand, and those who don't either don't have kids, don't remember what having kids is really like, or have it coming to them! I know I feel more pressured to have a well behaved child the older lo gets.

Yep, like today when he was screaming because I wouldn't carry him out of daycare and the director witnessed him throw himself to the floor and cling to my leg.

Or a month or two ago on a Friday night when I had to football carry him (and a big bag of food) out of a completely packed Chinese restaurant while he screamed bloody murder). My only saving grace was a middle-aged woman who opened the door for me and said "I've been there, and I don't miss it!"

Yep. D is 7 and he still embarrasses me often. M is just starting.

Never around my parents, though. I don't worry about it with them.

Oh my gosh yes!! But I've realized other parents have a lot more sympathy and understanding than I expect them to. A couple weeks ago we were at a park and my three year old boy, out of nowhere, body slammed a one year old girl. I was SO mortified and embarrassed and kept apologizing over and over to the mother and she was just laughing saying it was no big deal- she had boys too. I was relieved, but I still felt so embarrassed!!

Eating out is terrible at the moment. I carried her out and sat in the car with her the other day while DH finished eating.

Oh and the other day when I wouldn't let her open the toy we have at home, that we were buying for her friends birthday, she pitched a fit and screamed all through the supermarket and until we got home. The people staring...

At this point, I haven't been, but they are only 1 and almost 3. Usually it's normal kid behavior. I think I'll be embarrassed when they are older and willfully misbehave.

Yes, all the time! I get the parents thing too - my mom has amnesia or something and forgot what it's like to have little kids, because there's a lot of side eye when he misbehaves.

On a side note, whenever I see something in public and the parents look embarrassed, I try to smile at them...I've been there!

I think the older my son gets, the worse I get embarassed. When he was small, it really didn't matter, it was developmental. Now, it's defiance.

I feel worse when we are around people who are less forgiving. If my kids act up around my parents or close friends, I just deal with it and move on. If they act up in public, around my sister (who LOVES to tell me what great birth control my kids are....), around my in laws, or anyone else who is not forgiving, I get very embarrassed.

@looch: I totally agree! My five year old threw a temper tantrum at the zoo because I wouldn't get her a toy. It was SO big and loud, I wanted to crawl into a hole and hide. Then, when I tried to get her to move, she started screaming "Ow! That hurts! Stop hurting me" in front of field trips and teachers. All I could think was that these people were going to call CPS. I didn't even know what to do! I would much rather deal with my 18 month old, who screams because, well for no reason other than he's 18 months old. At least all the other moms can laugh at him with me. Her tantrum was so embarrassing.
