One of my friends spent $64 today and saved $89. I'm super excited if I can manage to save $4. She promised me and another friend she'd teach us her ways!
Are you good at couponing?

Yep! I'm one of those people at the store. Nearly every time I shop for groceries I end up with a 'saved' total that is larger than my 'spent' total.
This has been several years of figuring out what works best for our family and adapting to new coupon policies, new printing programs, new dietary changes, etc. I used to save a lot more but I spent more time on planning my shopping trips. These days I will take the time with LO over the time I used to spend figuring out the best deals

Nah, I'm happy with saving any money. I look and do Target Cartwheel (where we get groceries) but that is the extent!

I am very good at it! But it takes so much time and effort. Now I do the minimum-- I get the sunday paper, clip coupons for things we would DEFINITELY buy, and wait for them to go on sale.

Nooope - I do not have the time for that. Or the patience... mostly patience
I tried, but I didn't know what to do with all those stupid pieces of paper, then I'd be at the store trying to organize everything, then I just hated going because I dreaded dealing with it.
I would LOVE to be one of the people that 'gets' it

No, but I would love to be! I plan to SAH when baby arrives in spring & that is one of the things I hope to make time for when I'm no longer WOH full-time.

Nope, I don't remember the last time I used a coupon somewhere other than Bed, Bath & Beyond! Most of the groceries I buy aren't the type there are coupons for so I just try to look out for sales. And I can never think far enough ahead to get things like toothpaste, contact lens solution, etc before I need them RIGHT AWAY -- I really ought to get better at that!

I don't even try to coupon. I mainly shop at Trader Joe's or Costco for most of my needs. I try to wait for certain items to go on sale at Costco, and Trader Joe's never has sales! I find it cheaper and more convenient to buy stuff like diapers on Amazon.

@PurplePeony: it's super easy to get toothpaste almost for free
I have a stockpile of about 30 tubes left over from when I started couponing, and I've given a ton away. At CVS, coupon + sale price + extrabucks returned to you (to purchase other things you need) = $0.50 or free!!

Yep, like @mrs. wagon: said, it's all about the stockpile. When stuff is super cheap or free, I buy enough to last a good long while. I haven't bought deodorant in years now and I still have like 2 sticks left - and those were moneymakers where the sale and coupon ended up giving me back money towards my other purchases!
@PurplePeony: I hear you on most coupons being for stuff you don't buy. Some things just simply won't have coupons or they are so rare. I have been using $5/$30 purchase coupons that were from fundraiser books. For me, I consider that $5 a discount on meat, produce, whatever I like for that shopping trip.

yep! i could be better, but i'm pretty great at it. SO was impressed with my $80 target shop for $18 last wk end, most of which was fresh produce & meats. i never pay for toothpaste or mouthwash. i often make money on those.

@lindseykaye: I had to stop for like six months because my toothpaste, toothbrush, body wash, shampoo, razor, and deoderant stockpiles were getting out of control! I designated one set of shelves to the stockpile and they were overflowing, so I forced myself to stop. So hard when there were free deals, but the amount of toothpaste we had, we'll NEVER go through that amount before we move houses in the next few years. And I'm not moving a hundred tubes of toothpaste when we move!!
Then I started to run out of body wash, then shampoo, and I started back up again. Now I just do the BARE minimum.

I'm good at clipping the coupons but not using them. When I get to the store, it is often cheaper to buy store brand rather than name brand even with a coupon. The limited number of things that we refuse to use store brand don't ever have coupons. We really don't have space to stock pile too much so that doesn't work for us.

@mrs. wagon: Yes! Ditto. I had to give away a bunch of Pantene shampoo and conditioner I had gotten for free during a ladies clothing swap because there was just. no. room. I've also learned what a good stockpile amount is for us as far as food goes. When I've overbought and things are nearing their expiration, I just donate them and learn that no, we will not go through 8 jugs of juice before it goes bad. I try to be deliberate about using the stockpile now but it's been good to see where I bought too much and have that as a guide to keep me reeled in!

@lindseykaye: haha! it's always pantene! pantene, garnier, and tresseme!

I gotta learn how to do it! I am not picky about personal care stuff, so can we do an alert thread or something, just for coupon deals?
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Nope! But hubby's cousin is GREAT at it and finds deals all the time so she hooks me up with the info so I can get in on the deal!

Canadians don't get as many coupons as Americans do. Makes me so mad.
I used to be an avid couponer. Then we moved and we don't get the Sunday paper anymore.

I'm super excited to go shopping today. My friend passed along some advice so we will see how it goes.
My biggest excitement? Progresso soup is $10/10 on sale and I have 8 $0.50 coupons that my store will double. OMG! I bet that's the only deal I have hahaha
