I'd say I have about a 90% success rate, which is pretty good. Especially considering its hot as heck here most of the time and I only wash my hair once or twice a week, I need some kind of skill to not look like a sweaty zombie! Haha

Yes! But I recently went to a pixie cut.... so no messy buns for me for a while. I found that day 2-3 after washing is the best.

Not so much. I can do a neater bun and pull it off. But messy buns don't work well with my hair, and having loose strands that stick straight out bugs me. My hair is fine, silky, prone to tangles, has to be washed every day, and slides out of any style I put it in.

@erinbaderin: neither can I! Mine either looks bad messy or I have to do a sock bun to make it look tidy.

Nope. My hair is too short now, but even when it was long I could not manage to make it work.

Nope. My hair is long enough now that i can do a bun with minimal fly aways, but can't pull off the messy bun.

Ugh no. I think my hair is too fine. There's a fashion blogger I follow and she is the queen of messy buns. I can't mimic it no matter how hard I try.
Oh yeah, and 2 years PP I still have annoying baby hair growing in. When I put my hair straight back I have two horns that curl up in the front.

No, my hair is too straight and fine. I can do a neat bun no problem, but a messy bun never works on me.

Kinda...I have the messy part down. The problem lately is that my hair's actually getting a little too long, it was easier when it was just below my shoulders. And, I'm also still dealing with regrowth all around my face so like @SweetiePie: I've had some weird horn-like pieces of hair that have a mind of their own.

The messy bun is all i can do, my hair is to thick/long/curly to do any other type. I've never been able to put my hair in a regular pony on the top of my head, it falls.

@Caly: Yup. This. My hair is super long but I can't get it messy looking, just either a wispy mess or a tight ballerina look.

@SweetiePie: @GoGoSnoGirl: oh you mean like this? lol thankfully the dirtier my hair is, the more those lay flat.

@Mrs. Sunshine: haha yes but mine actually curl inward like actual devils horns. It's ridonk.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I HAVE THE EXACT SAME THING! It is untamable and never grows enough to do anything with! I camouflage with the flat iron if my hair's down, or try to hairspray it back if my hair is up. At which point I pray it doesn't stick back up again and look even more ridiculous with the hairspray. I can't find a good solution
Anyway, I'm decent with the messy bun itself, but the front of my hair/receding hairline makes it not look super put-together. It looks better when I wear a headband with the messy bun. And the bun stays better if I have some (dried) mousse in my hair to hold onto something, because my hair is medium-thick but fine, straight and smooth. It's a very strange combination.
