I am and I'm not. I don't actually need a lot of sleep to get by. But if I don't get a lot of sleep, I am much more crabby and irritable - and that's no fun for anyone around me!

No, I can function on very little but would much rather have a solid night's sleep.

Oh yes. I'm amazed at how well I'm functioning on 6-7 hours (broken), but I definitely have much lower energy. If I could get 10 hours sleep every night, I think I'd feel like a million bucks! Hahaha maybe in 12-15 years when my kids start sleeping in!

I have high sleep needs and it's bewildering to people in my life who have low sleep needs. I get frantic and anxious and super crabby and snappy. It's awful, it's like I become the worst possible version of myself without enough sleep. I know it's a big trigger for me so I try to nap a couple of times a week and go to bed early. Overall though it's been hands down the hardest part of being a parent.

No, I've always been a terrible sleeper, waking multiple times, having a hard time falling back to sleep. I used to think everyone was like that, like I had no idea people stayed asleep the whole night!

I have high sleep needs, which is part of the reason we are still co-sleeping at almost 5 months. I can't function with minimal sleep. I also try and fit naps in during the weekend.

Not right now. I'm usually good on 4-5 hrs of broken sleep. It's not at all ideal, but I can do it. 6-7 hrs is much better

I don't think so. 7 straight hours and I feel good mostly. I suck at baby sleep though.

@MrsSCB: I almost always wake to pee at night, even when not pregnant

I can function on very little but want a lot!

Dear god yes lol. I mean its ridiculous, I knew I needed sleep before DS, because my friends would always joke about me leaving a party early so I could go to bed. I need 10 hours, anything less and I'm not human. Which is why with a 4 month old, people I love just try to stay away from me as much as possible. It's crazy and one of the many reasons I'm one and done.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
Yes. I need a good 9 hours. The last 2 nights I've barely gotten 7 (interrupted) and I'm having sore muscles, my appetite is out of control, it's been a struggle not to scream at my kids all day. I'm a freaking mess. I gotta get to bed early tonighh

@mrbee: I've never even heard of this term until HB! I'm pretty sure that every human body requires a decent amount of sleep and we all feel like crap if we don't get it.

I just really like sleeping, ha! I can do it almost anywhere, anytime (like in a room full of talking people). I like going to bed super early (830/9pm) but I can't sleep in for the life of me. So, if I want lots of sleep, I know I need to get to bed early as the morning is not an option. Plus, you know I have a job I have to get up for anyway, haha. Lately I've been waking up naturally at 545am!

Yes and it's been my toughest adjustment as a parent. My almost 9 month old wakes twice a night still and its killllllling me. I 100% blame my PPD on lack of sleep.
papaya / 10560 posts
I love to sleep and pre-kids I would nap my whole weekend away. Now I just take what I can get, which is usually 6 hour a night max.
pear / 1697 posts
Less so than I had thought. I'm decidedly high sleep preferences, but LO has proven that my preferred amount is not truly a need.
Before LO I generally slept 8.5h/night. Now between sleep problems when hugely pregnant and having a baby who does not sleep well...I have gone almost a year and a half with a max of 4 hrs in a row and a max total of ~7/night.
I hate it and I'm clumsy and forgetful and crabby. But it hasn't utterly incapacitated me the way I would have expected prior to living it.

@Portboston: I think this is a good point, I also have ppd and I wonder if there is some correlation with high sleep needs people being more susceptible. I don't 100 percent blame it on my sleep needs but I do blame a lot.

I don't know...? I mean, I sleep 8 hours now and still don't feel rested. But DD didn't STTN till 8-9 months and I did survive and went back to work at 3 months too!
pineapple / 12566 posts
No. If I get 6-7 hours uninterrupted, then I'm fine. But having two kids who didn't STTN until after 1 was extremely difficult.

I am a night owl naturally so I guess I thought I wasn't completely high sleep needs but after I had my son I realized I really am - I NEED 7 hours at least to function but probably 9 is closer to what my body really optimally needs. I had a colicky reflux baby who didn't sleep for months and I legit thought I was going to die. I had severe PPD/PPA that I'm sure this Gitmo level sleep deprivation caused. I napped at the same time as DS once he was sleeptrained for months on top of sleeping at night to restore my sleep deficit.

I have a sweet spot for sleep of between 7-8 hours when I feel great. If I sleep more than that, it makes me feel groggy unless I am sick or recovering from a really long run. I can function on less, but I am grouchy and also crave junk food.
pear / 1616 posts
yes absolutely. i need at least 8 hours to function and average about 8-9 hrs most nights. and i still don't feel rested!
eggplant / 11287 posts
I mean, I guess no? I love sleep, and I would love to get a lot of it. But lately I've been getting 5-6 hours a night (broken up) and I'm doing okay. I'm tired, and resent my situation, lol, but I'm functioning. It makes it better if I just get up and get out.
I would say average is 7 hours broken up, but the last 2 weeks have been less.
I don't even think I'm capable of sleeping even 8 hours straight anymore. I have had a night nursing baby since 2012!

@Autumnmama79: my mom only sleeps about 4 hours a night! Wish I inherited that gene...

@mrbee: wow that's really amazing! Imagine how much she can get done in a day
coconut / 8279 posts
No. I'm a night owl and a morning person. I get 5-6 hours most nights.
If I have a particularly active few days in a row I might feel like I need more sleep.
