@Espion: I know most people are not trying to be racially insensitive when they point it out, so I try to roll with teh ouncges. But then you get people saying how much DD looks like me, but 'wow such gorgeous wavy hair and light skin...so cute'! It really annoys me because the implication is then that because I am dark skinned with kinky hair I am somehow less than...
Also, I feel like we have extended family on both sides who make too much of the perceived 'exotic factor'.

@plantains: I just cut off my hair and went natural (for the third time but that's a different story), and I know that will come up someday. I have kinky kinky tight curls, and our kids will probably have "good hair." I can see it now..

@dc yoga bee: I'm transitioning to ntural right now, and FIL and his lot love to talk about how 'crazy' my curls are and how lucky DD is that she has looser curls. Plus my side of the family are almost worse with all their talk about how I'm so lucky that my DD has 'good hair', very annoying. My hair is good too dammit!

@dc yoga bee: @plantains: Oh man, the good hair thing. I bet you both have beautiful hair. Kinky hair is beautiful, too P.S. we need to have our own natural hair discussion

@plantains: Man. I can honestly say I feel your pain. My cousins all got my grandmothers Cherokee Indian hair, and I did not. From being teased by them for my ugly, nappy hair to comments that hopefully no child gets my hair I can totally relate. I'm still learning to be comfortable in my own skin, and justlearned to ignore them. I'm here if you ever need to vent!

Nope, we're both Asian. I'm Chinese and DH is Cambodian.
A lot of my exes were white though. I grew up in a very white town. Even my BFFs growing up were white.
Funny story: My current BFF (we've been BFFs for awhile now) thought she was white growing up. It was until she was in 4th grade she "realized" she was Asian. hahaha!

@plantains: This is definitely good to know! So, in a way, I'm really glad it came up. I love natural hair too. One of my favorite chief residents totally embraced hers despite what people "thought" a physician "should" look like. She let it be a statement all on its own. Like a superpower no one else could have, but in the most awesomely awesome way.

@Espion: I'm really glad to hear that! I was afraid i wouldn't get a job out of law school so I relaxed again, and everyone in the office just about is natural! I'm also in a much more progressive place now.

@dc yoga bee: My MIL actually cut out a picture of a random bi-racial family (mom, dad, two kids) and had it at her desk at work. She would tell her co-workers that this would be her future family!!!
Like a handful of bees here, another Viet (me) and white (hubs) couple here!
