Our first house was definitely a starter home but we have moved into what we think is our forever home. I can definitely see us raising our kids at minimum here. We might retire to the lake someday. What about you?

Our first home is a starter home but it is our forever home. Unless we change our mind when we retire.

That's a nice feeling! Not for us. This was DW's townhome before we met and we will be moving now that we have a child. Probably 18-24 months from now! The street is not very safe or child-friendly!

I don't believe in forever homes. Our current house is sufficient, I don't foresee us moving in the next 5 years. But who knows what the future brings??
pineapple / 12234 posts
When we bought it, we thought so.
I love seeing how much we've paid off on our house and I like the idea of not having a mortgage someday. But we'll be a family of 6 this summer and I'm guessing our house will feel pretty cramped in a few years.
pear / 1616 posts
Yup this will be the home until the kids are in college at least but maybe forever
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
Definitely not. Smallish 2 bedroom condo in the city with no storage and two flights of stairs. We probably have another move before our long term home.
@BandDmommy: Dh is the same, he doesn't believe in a forever home and would always want to move if there was something better. I feel like we can reach a level that's good enough and I wouldn't want to move. But like you said who knows what the future holds.

Definitely our forever home that we will raise our children in and way past when they're in college. Who knows if we'll retire here when we have grandkids. That's way in the future.
We already have plans of blowing out the wall between our bedroom and the one next door. And creating a sick master bedroom with an insane master bath.

Nope. We're renting a three bedroom townhouse with a teeny postage stamp backyard. It's a child friendly neighbourhood, but I want a useable basement and a bigger yard.
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
No forever home for us. We are really content where we are but I would like somewhere bigger for the preteen/teen years and then probably something smaller once the kid's are grown.
grapefruit / 4355 posts
Nope – not planning on it! The house is big enough that if something happened in the future and we were never able to move, we could certainly make it work. But we do plan to get more space (in a much better yard!) eventually.
nectarine / 2951 posts
Unless we win the lottery, we are in our forever home. It is big enough, has a good yard, and we have great neighbors and schools. I moved so much through out my 20s, that I never want to pack another moving box again!
pomegranate / 3350 posts
DH thinks so but our school district seems to be going downhill so I may lobby to move again. It really depends on a lot.

I doubt it. We'll downsize when we retire instead of paying these crazy taxes. Taxes are only going to keep going up!
pomelo / 5678 posts
I don't particularly like or believe in the concept.
I just don't think it is for me! I like to remain open to possibilities and I don't like to think like that. Maybe someday we'd like to build a small, modern, sustainable place in the city (still near downtown), or find one, and I could see staying there, but I also love the thought of endless possibilities.
For now, I love our townhouse, we can walk most everywhere, it is new, no hassle, low utilities, and in a great school district. I used to miss having a yard, but it keeps me active to have to get out and walk to a park everyday, plus it is LO's most favorite thing, and that's how we make friends. If we had a yard that might not happen. Plus we have an amazing community garden plot in her favorite park. She could even walk to the uni, but no, I like changing things up and having endless possibilities.

I don't think so. We just bought last May and the plan is maybe 6-7 years until DH switched to a different school for work in a better district. We'll see. This home is large enough for the number of children we're planning and the back yard is about an acre, so it will definately work forever if we wanted it to!

Our first home is our starter home, its a 25 year old house and we remodeled everything on our own. We have alot of room but its a split level home not my fav, saving up so we can purchase an home we would live in forever
nectarine / 2243 posts
@mrsjazz: yes this
And to answer the OPs question. God I hope not
ETA: I have a different view on this forever home thing. We'd like to continue renting in the NYC area. If someday we have the means we'd like a forever "weekend" home. One of those prefab tiny house things on a pretty But small piece of land in upstate New York. Small budget. No space for visitors. Just a bed and bunks for the kid(s). We'd pay for it upfront (ha, dreaming) so there would be no mortgage and it will always be there. Forever.

We are in our forever home. We bought a starter home and fixed it up over a 5 year period and then bought our forever home. Lots to do on this one too but I love our neighborhood and can't imagine moving again
nectarine / 2521 posts
I believe more in "stages of life" homes, and we just moved into the one that will be ours for a major portion of our lives while raising children, and bought with that intention in mind. We will definitely move into something much smaller after this stage of our life is over.
cantaloupe / 6131 posts
We bought our house thinking we would stay about 3-5 years, but it's a house we could live in for longer if necessary. We would ideally like to build a house next and it would probably be the house we live in until the kids are grown. I am pregnant with #2 and DH works from home a lot so our 3 bedroom plus den is capacity. DH will always need a home office, we need a 3 car garage, we'd like to have guest quarters, and for our kids to have a rumpus room and a yard. And DH really wants a single story home because of his ankles AND he would like a pool soooo that's a lot of square footage we'd have to save for. But we are homebodies and really enjoy being at home together and entertaining so I see it as a home + our hobbies rolled into one.

We custom built our house and plan on staying here "forever," but who knows. Life is unpredictable!

No way, the thought of staying in the same house or city forever makes me feel really claustrophobic! Moving is so cleansing, and I want my child to have the perspective that comes with living in different areas, different types of homes, etc.
watermelon / 14467 posts
No. Eventually we would like something a bit bigger and further from town.

We're in the house we plan to raise our kids in. When we retire I hope to move some place warm and not have to deal with snow ever again.
grapefruit / 4291 posts
Nope, DH is military and we're due to be posted again at the end of this year so have less than twelve months left in our current home.
nectarine / 2591 posts
Not even close, we're in a two bedroom townhouse. At this point I'd rather comfortably pay our bills and have some left over rather than have a big house.
pomelo / 5866 posts
For me, I really like the idea of living in my forever home. It is more economical (don't ever have to pay moving/buying/selling fees, super low interest rate), able to develop long term relationships and commit/invest into the community where we are. Just love that I don't ever have to move again. I came from a renting childhood that never had stability and I definitely had attachment issues with friendships. Meaning, friends had to make most of the effort to keep our relationship alive or it just died because I was used to people going in and out with all the moves. We moved almost every year after 4th grade (and a few times before that) so I just appreciate being able to rest in a home that has the idea of forever with it!
grapefruit / 4056 posts
Nope! We bought this to be a 5 year home almost 7 years ago now and I have the itch to move - we are saving up until we can build a home ourselves on a small acreage.
persimmon / 1447 posts
Nope. I'm military so we're here for the next 2.5 years then onto the next home
pineapple / 12053 posts
Nope. We're renting and even when we do buy, I don't know we'll be anywhere forever! But both my parents and DH's have been in their homes for 30+ years with no plans for moving!
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
We'll most likely live in this house until the kids graduate high school, then who knows!
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
I like our house for our family right now but we will probably move if/when my inlaws move in with us.
pineapple / 12566 posts
No. We aren't even in our forever country. I have no idea where we will be in 4 years.
