Are you intermittent fasting? Tell me about it.

@crazydoglady: yes, I am not a coffee drinker and have always drunk black or green tea so just continued with that. There are lots of nice teas that are easy to drink with no milk or sugar.

@charm55: I know you do a longer fast in the day, what does your typical meal "plan" look like? For example. late lunch at 3, dinner at 6? dessert at 8?

@crazydoglady: yesterday was a pretty typical weekday....around 3:00 I had a banana, babybel cheese, orange juice and goldfish pretzels. It doesn't sound like a lot but I have always been more of a grazer and it truly fills me up until dinner. Then at 6:00 I had a bbq chicken & cheese quesasdilla, guacamole and chips, and baby carrots. At 7:00 I had chocolate chip cookies.

Some days, like today, are not typical...I will have my same snacks around 3:00 but then won't eat again until 7:30 after I finish leading my daugher's Girl Guide troop. It will be McDonalds drive-thru and I will feel zero guilt about it

@charm55: Thank you for explaining! Are you genuinely not hungry until three or can you sort of push the "snooze" button since you know you can eat later?

  5. charm55

    apricot / 286 posts

@crazydoglady: genuinely not hungry... sometimes I get the urge to eat around noon,
but that’s more out of habit because everyone else is stopping to eat for lunch. If it doesn’t pass, I take it as a sign that my body is truly hungry and I open my window early.

@charm55: Did it take a while to build up to eating at 3? For the past two days, I have been clean fasting and I actually feel more hungry than when I had half and half in my coffee. Maybe it just takes time? I have it in my head that I shouldn't be hungry so that I am doing this "right."

  7. charm55

@crazydoglady: it definitely took time. The first two weeks are the hardest - after that appetite correction generally kicks in and everything becomes more regulated. Hang in there !

@crazydoglady: I’m more hungry with the clean fasting too

@gotkimchi: I was seriously fine, just a little peckish...now I just opened my window, ate my lunch and still want to eat.

@charm55: Even though I have been doing IF for a month, I'm guessing I basically need to do a "do-over?" since it wasn't a true clean fast?

  11. KNS

    cherry / 136 posts

@crazydoglady: I find it varies day to day with me though - some days I can go much longer without thinking and some days I am starving by 12. Not necessarily at all related to how much I ate the day before.

@crazydoglady: @gotkimchi: I am kind of relieved to hear that you are both noticing more hunger with a clean fast...ME TOO! I was really worried I was still doing something wrong

@mrswin: @gotkimchi: I am relieved as well! I seriously miss half and half more than eating outside of my window! I am going to see if the scale budges in a week, I might keep it but gosh I hate black coffee.

@crazydoglady: @mrswin: @gotkimchi: I think it shows that half-n-half had an impact. Stick it out with the clean fasting a bit longer, I bet you'll see the appetite correction just like you did before. I started "dirty fasting" for the 1st month then switched to clean fasting, and I think it was a good way of easing in.

Overall it is so surprising how little food our bodies actually need, isn't it?

@mrswin: @gotkimchi: Any better today? I'm actually feeling much better. I ended up starting my fast last night at 6:15 vs 7:30 (when I normally do,) had a small cup of black coffee before work, and brought my huge iced coffee with half and half with me so I could break my fast at 10:15 with it, and then have lunch at 11:30. This whole no half and half during the fast has thrown me for a loop, but I have lost nearly 1.5 lbs from 2 days ago so it must be doing *something*.

@crazydoglady: I’m glad it’s working! I think shifting up a bit is a great solution if you can make it work for you.

Ladies I don’t even know who I am anymore. I just made my favorite cookie dough and frosting and wasn’t tempted to eat either (I will have some eventually of course). It’s so amazing!!
I’m not even trying to lose anything this month, I’m not being super careful about my window so I can enjoy life but the real freedom is not being a slave to craving alllllll the sugar and treats.

    How is everyone doing??

  20. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@bhbee: That's great! Was it outside of your window?
I just did a 7:00pm-3:30pm fast and did pretty good! I feel like I am still trying to find a timing that works well for me.

  21. bhbee

    cantaloupe / 6086 posts

@crazydoglady: yes it was. And i didn’t care so that was awesome! I made it after the kids ate dinner which is way past my window when I do 16:8.

You know I love the early window. I find it soooo much easier and I don’t worry too much about not eating dinner because dh is usually not home during the week so I often ate later with him anyway, and like tonight I’m often managing the toddler vs eating anyway. On the weekend I just go for maybe 9am-6pm since we eat early most days.

I hope you find a good rhythm soon! I think LO is done nursing so now I have to see what happens with weaning ...

  22. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@bhbee: That makes perfect sense! Plus, you can always have one tomorrow!

The thing is, (in an ideal world,) I would do 9:30-5:30. I would get my half and half in the morning, have lunch, and then a larger early dinner (and dessert) and be good for the night, but then we wouldn't be eating dinner together. I don't even really like eating dinner! The thing I dislike is going to bed knowing I am going to have to continue fasting in the morning until lunch. I might try an earlier window and just see what happens. I'm in the same boat with working on weaning. I am secretly hoping that I will shed some weight after. 😅

    cantaloupe / 6086 posts

@crazydoglady: yes I am totally with you!! I can’t handle morning fasting with a good attitude. I don’t think skipping dinner is a great long term plan, but I’ve decided since it’s working well for me I’ll keep doing it short term and then hopefully go to a longer window for maintenance.

Ps there is definitely some evidence (not conclusive at this point) that earlier fasting just works better with the body’s clocks and processes. So I hope it makes a difference!

  24. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@bhbee: That's exactly what I am thinking for maintainence...like even a 12 or 13 hour fast. But I am a looooong way from maintainance (well, 23 lbs feels like a lot.) I was feeling discouraged because the last couple of weeks have been gaining and losing the same 2ish pounds, but I am down 6 lbs in a bit over a month. Not too shabby!

  25. bhbee

    cantaloupe / 6086 posts

@crazydoglady: funny that has been exactly my experience too - getting stuck in the same couple pounds for what feels like forever, but overall seeing things move down and the big picture is what matters! If you find the right window hopefully that makes it easier to keep going even when the results stall for a little while. That’s the only reason I didn’t quit in those times - it was easy.

So there is definitely something to that whole clean/dirty fasting thing...... i'd always heard that the whole diet coke wasn't good for you b/c it tricks your mind into wanting more sweet foods and I thought that was stupid b/c I don't have a sweet tooth and thought it didn't affect me. Well, I was drinking brewed cacao with little stevia (i hate coffee) while I was fasting in the morning and would find that it would be hard to make it to noon. And then last week and this week I've cut that out and have been completely fine. Even on those mornings when I work out at 6 am. Huh. Mind blown.

  28. mrswin

    nectarine / 2433 posts

@gotkimchi: thanks for checking in. Things seem to be going well since I started clean fasting... I lost 1.3 lbs in two days when I dropped the cream out of my coffee and changed nothing else 🤦‍♀️ It is crazy that was making such a difference

  29. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@mrswin: That's great! What I have been doing is bringing my huge iced coffee to work with me, sipping on it, and then adding some half and half when my window opens. It's been working!

@gotkimchi: How have you been doing?

  31. gotkimchi

    nectarine / 2400 posts

@crazydoglady: fine, really not seeing my weight change which is frustrating but this is so easy to do I’ve kept at it. Like I said earlier I might reevaluate come January how I approach this

  32. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@gotkimchi: Gin Stephen's said that some people don't lose for a month or so and then *whoosh* drop 5 lbs. I wonder if that's what you are experiencing.

I can't remember if this has been shared here:

So, something crazy is happening: I am getting used to black coffee (iced.) It's so weird! I was repulsed by it a week ago!

@crazydoglady: I actually find it amazing how much of food preferences are really just habit and acclimation to that over time rather than a really true preference!

  35. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@KNS: Seriously! Plus, I can have all the half and half I want when I break my fast. Also funny is that a coworker brought in some See's truffles, I grabbed two, ate one, took a bite of the other, and threw the rest away! I was just over it. So weird!

  36. KNS

    cherry / 136 posts

@crazydoglady: But also so amazing that you don't feel at all restricted when you can do that. I totally find that I will take more of things and then not want most of it. I feel sort of wasteful but it's so much better than how I used to end up eating so much even when I was trying to be "good"

  37. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@KNS: YES!! I ate so much because it was there. I now give my leftovers to my husband and it works well! I wonder why we are eating less and not eating out of compulsion. I hear ya about wasting food, but I also figure that eating it when I don't want it isn't effective use either.

  38. KNS

    cherry / 136 posts

@crazydoglady: Oh for sure - I meant more that it feels nice to have the freedom to take two and then also decide you don't want all of it.

  39. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@KNS: I see! It's funny the way it works. I fully anticipated ravenously stuffing my face during my window.

  40. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@bhbee: So, I had a similar experience that you had with your cookie making. I did a ton of baking and, usually, I will snack on it and the ingredients the entire time I am baking and feel so sick at the end. This time, I had like 3 pieces (maybe) and that was it! My window closed while I was putting everything in baggies to hand out, packed one I hadn't tried in my lunch and am enjoying it now. When I first considered starting IF, it almost sounded like a starvation diet. Now, it just seems like "normal" eating. Like, it's normal to not stuff your face to point of a stomachache and it's normal/healthy to wait to have a treat.
A couple of weeks ago, I started feeling like throwing in the towel, and I am so glad I didn't.
