Are you intermittent fasting? Tell me about it.

@macintosh: are you drinking enough water? I am really bad about that but I need a lot more doing IF which surprised me. That might make a difference. And really aim for protein in your last food before the fast. I always have headaches from allergies so I can’t tell if some might be from fasting too but I do sometimes feel bad at the end even a few months in.

@crazydoglady: i think so, I’m eating pretty normally during my window - but cravings are way down! My window is 11/12-8pm.

@bhbee: I think you’re onto something. Today I felt the headache coming on around 14 hours and I chugged 24 ounces of water with my 2nd cup of coffee, so that seemed to help. I made it to 16 hours today because we went to Bob Evans for brunch and it took forever to get our food

How is everyone doing getting back in the swing of things after the holidays? I am up 1.5 lbs. I'm looking forward to getting back to normal. I've been sticking to my window (for the most part) but have been eating more candy. cookies, etc then I even want because it's there. It's still much better than years past. I still have another 20-25lbs to go, so I need to keep going forward.

@crazydoglady: I’m up as well since I last weighed early December, about 4lbs, but for the first time I’m not at all stressed about it. I started back with watching my window and eating better foods within that window. I already feel a million times better. I also noticed I sleep so much more soundly when I’m fasting.

I’ve also started doing the 7 minute workout daily again.. it’s all I have the energy for but I do find it does make a difference !

@crazydoglady: basically same here. I’ve been back on the wagon mostly since the 1st but I did a lot of shorter (or even sub 12 hour) “fasts” from the 22nd on (and ate a bunch) so I gained about two pounds when I weighed in on the 1st. I’m happy with that because often I’m fighting off 10 in January! I’ve done good fasts the past two days and looking to continue. I’m hoping to get 20 more pounds off by our vacation we usually take end of April / early May. If it goes more slowly that’s ok too, we’ll see as I think I’m officially weaning this week (last time I tried it, we went back to once a day after 3 days. But now I think we’re both ready). I’m hoping my chest gets a little smaller whether that means weight loss or not!

I’m so glad for IF still, because on the first I didn’t have to prep special foods or start weighing and counting. I just got right back with it by stopping eating.

@charm55: tell me about the 7 minute workout!

@bhbee: yes! I’m usually fighting off 10lbs by January too. And starting with WW/point counting. This was so easy to jump right back into so I am grateful for IF too.

    https://www.google.ca/amp/s/greatist.com/amp/move/7-minute-workout-that-science-says-works

I use a 7 minute workout app - it’s 30 seconds of different exercises (step up, sit ups, jumping jacks, etc). I like it because it needs no special equipment, can be done anywhere, and I don’t have to even change into gym clothes. I literally have no excuses not do it. When I do it every day I find it really does help tone everything and boost my energy.

@bhbee: I just weaned like 5 days ago! V had been showing signs of slowing down (after being a TOTAL boob monster) before my sister and I went on a weekend trip. I didn't have to pump at all. When I came back, V made a halfhearted attempt at nursing and that was it. I will admit that I had a really teary evening once it was over. On the bright side, she isn't trying to undress me in public anymore, I'll have more time in the mornings, and I have an appt set up to get my nonexistent eyebrows microbladed tomorrow!
I'm also curious how this will affect my weight, but it didn't seem to change much after my son.

As far as work puts go, I am starting the mommastrong on Saturday. It's only 15 min a day and is specific to the needs of the momma body.

Thinking maybe I can do this with the kids!

@charm55: I'm so glad you posted that article about holiday eating because the old diet mentality tells me I should pull an all day fast to drop it, but that will do nothing but lead to feelings of restriction. It's best to just go back to my new normal way of eating.

@bhbee: I use this one and I like it ! Yes my daughters love watching me do it and join in every now and then. This morning my 4yo was a little drill sergeant : “mommy you have to lift your arm in the air like the picture, no mommy you have to do the push up down to the ground more” 😫

@crazydoglady: I think that’s my favourite part of IF ... it’s the complete opposite of diet mentality. I was pretty successful with WW back in the day- became a lifetime member and everything ... but I would blow all my points on one event and the next day feel like I had to starve myself. It was miserable.

@crazydoglady: We've been on vacation for two weeks, eating out quite a bit and drinking tropical drinks. I asked the hotel to bring a scale on the first day and I haven't gained ANY weight at all. I have mostly stuck to my window but otherwise haven't really watched what I have been eating. I am so happy about that and once we get back I want to focus on eating more cleanly in my window so I can shed about 3-5 more pounds.

@crazydoglady: I’ve had some sad times about weaning too. I was really sad the first time (before we restarted) because I didn’t see it coming. I took the turn of the year hard anyway - passage of time, my older kids being so grown up, no more babies, etc - so weaning is one more thing on that list. But truthfully, I’m over it - it’s just this larger idea of stages passing that gets me. And I’m also really looking forward to a little extra morning time and hoping it helps us be less rushed.

  15. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@bhbee: Same. I told my husband that I wasn't sad about weaning per se (I've never been super into breastfeeding,) but I am sad that I am done with the baby phase. I'm trying to focus on all the positives like being able to travel, having more independence etc, but it's still hard.

@crazydoglady: totally with you. I also imagine myself pregnant and dealing with the 3 I have and that pretty much cures it
And, I’m ready to be in control of what my body does! I got pregnant last time up a lot weight wise already ... no way do I want to start over there.

  17. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@bhbee: That's a good point. I'm just sad that we are "only" having two, but I am more sad that the stage is coming to a close vs truly feeling like we were meant to have another.

ok... so I'm thinking I might try this. But I can't pick my hours... I think I want an earlyish window closing at 6 pm or maybe 630 pm.

So I guess I'd be looking at 10-6

I have been eating breakfast around 8 am and then I usually go to lunch at 11 am, snack at 2 pm, dinner at 6 pm.

Do you all just skip "breakfast" and go straight to lunch? or would you eat breakfast at 10 and then push back lunch to 12 and snack to 3 or would you just get rid of snack all together?

  21. bhbee

    cantaloupe / 6085 posts

@Ajsmommy: I would start by eating whatever sounds best to you. If you would feel super satisfied by a breakfast-y egg sandwich at 10, go for that. If an early lunch sounds good, do that. Whatever works best for making you satisfied and full. Beyond that, I’d just see how it goes. I often eat a filling breakfast around 9 and am just not hungry until a late lunch. That will adjust over time, but the idea is, eat when you’re hungry during the window and don’t try to limit too much! I try to focus on protein and fiber for fullness too - so like keeping nuts around for snacks works for me.

@Ajsmommy: So, you’ll notice that you’re currently eating around every three hours normally. IF works because it stops you from eating as much food (lower calories) and your insulin doesn’t spike as often since you’re eating at fewer intervals (and therefore burning reserve fat).

With that in mind, I would cut out either breakfast or lunch. Like BHBEE said, you could have a nice late breakfast or an early lunch. The idea that we should eat 3 meals + a snack was invented in the 1950s. You can look around and see where that got us as a society!

  23. Ajsmommy

    pomegranate / 3355 posts

@bhbee: thanks! I used to not be a breakfast person at all so I'm thinking that maybe i'll migrate back to that ....

@Hypatia: gotcha… So I think i'll cut out the breakfast and just have lunch.. so then I could do lunch at 11 like usual... and a snack if hungry and then dinner.. Thanks

@Ajsmommy: That's exactly what I do and it works really well for me. It might take some time to get used to it but then it'll be second nature. Good luck!

@Mommy Finger: what are your eating hours? Thanks!

  26. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@Ajsmommy: I started off with a 12-8 window, but try to do a 10:30-6:30 or so because the earlier I close my eating window the night before, the sooner I get to have my half and half the next day.
I think the important thing is to not try to squeeze all 3 meals and snacks into an 8 hour window. So, I skip breakfast, have lunch, a snack when I get home around 3:30, dinner and a small dessert. Some days, I am more snacky and eat less at actual meals.

  27. Mommy Finger

    pomegranate / 3272 posts

@Ajsmommy: I try to do 12-8 but usually finish dinner by 6:30 so I sometimes have a shortened window. There are days where I can't make it to noon so I'll start at 11. I skip breakfast and start with lunch. I'm really good about this during the week bc of work and am a little more lax on the weekends.

I'm just starting my IF adventure! I started last night. I always snack in the evenings - food and wine. So last night I felt totally sad while watching Bachelor and not having wine. But cutting out my evening snacking is something I know I need to do since at this point I don't want to work out more. I'm hoping IF helps. I would love to try my hours fasting hours 6pm-12pm. But I also know that its hard to eat dinner by that time since I WOH. Thanks for all your inspiration. I'd love to lose 15 pounds. I got there easily after baby #1 but I'm back up after baby #2.

I have a question. If my hours are normally 10-6, but for some reason I want to eat late one day (like if I am going out), can I just eat say 12-8 that day, 12-6 the next day, then back to 10-6? Or I can I not jump my windows around like that even if I fast at least 16 hours each day?

  31. bhbee

    cantaloupe / 6085 posts

@agold: good luck! I think you’ll get used to evenings pretty quickly!

@Ms. RV: I would imagine there are different approaches, but I don’t stress about it and just aim to keep the eating window to 8. So before that day, you’d do 18 hours of you did 6p-12p. The day after, 14. I figure it evens out in the end and it’s not worth sweating the small stuff. I definitely shift a bit on weekends and often do a longer weekend window also and I’ve still seen results.

  32. Mommy Finger

    pomegranate / 3272 posts

@Ms. RV: You can totally do that!

  33. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@agold: I think you'll do great! My issue was snacking (like tons) in the evening and starting the day with sugar. The worst day to go without my nighttime snacking was the first day. It's now become a routine.

  34. crazydoglady

    nectarine / 2431 posts

@Ms. RV: Absolutely! It might mess with your hunger, but I do that all the time.

  35. Ajsmommy

    pomegranate / 3355 posts

So I made it 15 hrs for my first fasting period. Feeling pretty ok about this... I feel like the first 2-4 days might be the hardest. Since I broke my fast a tad early today I'll try to end my window earlier tonight and see how it goes.

I was doing a little googling and I saw one article that said woman should do a 14 hr vs a 16 hr fast but i can tell from your prior posts that most of you do the 16 hr... is there any reasoning to that? is 16 better?

  36. DesertDreams88

    grapefruit / 4361 posts

@Ajsmommy: the longer you go, the more effective it is.

  37. bhbee

    cantaloupe / 6085 posts

@Ajsmommy: I agree, more results from longer. That said, the most important thing is that you can live with it. So if 16 just seems too long, what I’ve read says that anything over 12 is beneficial so 14 or 15 is good too. It definitely gets easier over time to do more, once your hunger adjusts, so I wouldn’t worry about doing 16 the first week.

Thinking of starting! I could do 12-9. We eat dinner late after putting LO to bed and working out. But I really need my coffee. Is there any point of going 12-9 but having coffee at ~9am? Haha

    cantaloupe / 6085 posts

I did a semi-accidental 18+ fast last night (missed the end of my window and decided to stick it out) - I felt so great this morning! I don’t get that high all the time but it’s amazing when it happens. I think it’s also my body readjusting after being looser with everything in December. I definitely need a reset as I’ve been stuck at the same number a while and want to get going.
