My grandfather was a fraternal twin and apparently if it skips a generation (which it did) the next one is more likely to conceive twins. DH told me last night that we are not allowed to have twins, especially when we try for a 2nd ("definitely no 3 kids, we don't have enough bedrooms"). If we do, he says we're giving one away, "lots of good families looking for kids!" Oh, DH. I just laughed at him the whole time.
What about you? What do you and your DH think of multiples?

My grandmother had sibling who were twins, so I'm not sure if that increases our chances or not. We will be happy with whatever we get, though. We only have 3 bedrooms (including the master), but we're fine with kids sharing rooms. I think it's good for them.
I would be TERRIFIED to have twins at this point because I can't imagine dealing with two newborns and a toddler all at the same time, but I know we'd survive.

Without medical intervention, no, I would have no chance conceiving twins. Now that I've done IUI and might be doing IVF, yup, there's definitely a chance.

I'm not sure! It really runs in my family! My grandma (mom's side) had 2 sets of twins, and my mom had 1 set of twins!

My mom said there are twins on her side of the family but I think it's pretty distant because I don't know who it is.
I wouldn't mind twins!

Well, we have identical twins, and the chance of another set of those is only line 1 in 70,000. But, my paternal grandmother was a fraternal twin and my maternal grandmother was an identical twin who have birth to fraternal twins. So...I think there's a decent chance that I have the hyper ovulation gene and therefore, could have an increased chance of fraternal twins. We're going to try for another baby someday, but we will definitely anxiously await our first ultrasound to see if it's one or if it's multiples.

My dad is a fraternal twin, but I think it had more to do with my grandmother's age at the time (40) than genetics... apparently you're more likely to have twins at an older age.
However, we're doing IVF, so yes, it's very possible. If we do wind up with twins, I'm sure everyone will just point to my dad as the explanation (everyone who doesn't know about the IVF, that is). I'd be thrilled with twins, once they were born. I'm more worried about having a high risk pregnancy, which is the main reason we only transferred one embryo in our first IVF cycle.

I have identical twin brothers, but I'm pretty sure that has no bearing on my chances. When we were TTC D was excited and hopeful thinking that it meant we'd have a higher chance of getting twins (back when we were both still on board with two kids). He was sad when I told him that's not really how it works.

My MIL is a fraternal twin, but I think my BIL covered multiples for us. He had triplets through IVF. Two embryos were put in and one split. I'd rather not have multiples! But if it were ever to happen, then it was supposed to be!

Nope no family history on either side, although I believe it is just the mother's side that matters? My cousin did just have twins without any family history, so it is always possible! First round I would have been okay, but now having a toddler, twin infants would be very difficult! I would have to quit working because daycare would be too expensive.

On my father's side my grandfather had a fraternal twin sister and my grandmother, his wife, had twins (my uncles). No history on my mother's side.

Twins don't run in our family that I know of but in my monitoring I learned that I naturally ovulate more than one egg sometimes!

I'm not opposed to it, though. It would be crazy, but it would be nice to be done with my second pregnancy, have two more kids, then feel *extra* justified in a tummy tuck, hahaha. And i die of cute every time i see Mrs. Blue's boys squealing at each other.

I'm having twins, but they are IVF babies. My dad has several sets of twins in his family, though, and my maternal grandmother had twin sisters. We're obviously excited about twins since we're actually having them, but it helps that they weren't a complete surprise since we transferred two embryos!

Both sides of my family have twins two generations above mine. So if it skips a generation, it gives me a good chance. Depending on if that's reliable anyways.

@LindsayInNY: from what I've read, twins appear to skip a generation because a woman could have twin boys, and then the twin boys (who would not be any more likely to have twins themselves) could pass the hyperovulation gene on to their daughters, who could then have twins.

I'm with you, do NOT want this to happen, especially as we already have one LO. I'm actually terrified of it. I'll be at least 35 by the time I'd be pregnant again if we decide to have more, and I've heard that it gets more common with age? Not sure if there's anything to that theory.

@Shutterbug: My paternal grandmother had two sets of twin siblings - I think one survived and the other didn't or only partially did? Not sure which. And my mom has it somewhere in her family but not sure where. My mom's brothers kids all have kids, no twins. Dad's side doesn't have grandkids yet so who knows. With my luck, it would happen when trying for LO#2

Somewhere in the family tree, there are fraternal twins. I can never remember the details!
My husband wants twins. However, he has never changed a diaper or done anything past play and cuddle with babies. I've been babysitting since I was 12, so my eyes are wide open to the work involved with babies! I'd prefer one at a time, but would still be excited if we have twins.

My father is a fraternal twin and also has a set of twin brothers so I knew there was a chance. We were still shocked when we found out we were having twins more shocked when we learned they were identical. They were our firsts. We just had a singleton and like Mrs. Blue mentioned we were on edge at the 1st ultrasound. Think we are done especially since I am getting older and worry that the next pregnancy would be twins.

There were no twins in our family and I thought I couldn't get pregnant, then bam....identical twins. Go figure. Before we tried getting pregnant again DH made me look up all the stats on the likelihood of having twins again. Since they were identical and we don't have twins in our family we figured we were safe, but it was definitely the first thing I asked at our ultra sound. "Please Dr. Tell me it is only one in there!!!" I don't know if I could handle a second set of twins at that point.

We have them on both sides and my sister just had a set of fraternal twins last year. I would freak out if this pregnancy is twins but would also be excited not to have to decide about having a third someday.

I have always wanted twins. My father is an identical twin, his brother/sister fraternal. I also have cousins that are fraternal. Hubs has two sets of cousins that are identical.
My sister never had twins and my first cousin on my dad's side did not have twins (yet).

Yep, they run in our family! My grandma was a twin, DH's grandma was a twin, and I have twin sisters.
The only thing that scares me about having twins is the finances. I don't know how we would afford 3 in daycare!

Both of my grandmothers had twins, and my aunt & cousin both had "natural" twins (not fertility treatments) .... Not sure about DH's family though.

Twins run on my mother's side of the family, I was a twin but my mother lost the other baby and I was pregnant with twins but had a miscarriage in September. According to the doctor, family history and age are huge factor in conceiving fraternal twins. Apparently your chances of releasing two eggs when you ovulate are higher the older you get.
I was terrified of the idea at first but now I actually hope it happens again. It seems like so much fun - and hard work - but also fun lol
