We did not have steak knives for over 7 years because we were buying our Global knives piece by piece (didn't register for them since it's a Korean superstition to not give knives as a gift or ask for them) and didn't want to spring for the steak set just yet!

Then we got a very very late wedding gift from an uncle of mine that my family hadn't been in touch around the time I got married. A $100 gift card to Macy's. So nice. We wracked our brains for something that we would have loved to register for that we never bought or received as a gift. We came upon a set of Henckles (or Wusthof? I forget) steak knives that have handles exactly like our Crate and Barrel flatware, so we got them! We figured we were dodging the superstition since the gift was the gift card and we did the purchasing of the knives ourselves. Heheh.

@mamabear57: we have the same kitchen supplies! I recently acquired I giant Staub at an outlet and was beyond excited.

Yup, loyal to our knife and cookware brands! Our knives are Wustof (though one has a different handle design ugh!) and our cookware is Le Creuset and All-Clad. One day I'll cheat on the LC and replace it with Staub.

We were fortunate enough to receive a complete set of Cutco knives for our wedding. I love them! We will now only buy Cutco. As for cookware, I have a mix of Le Cruset, AllClad, Tramontina (a less expensive but high quality stainless steel), and Calphalon nonstick. I very rarely cook with nonstick but my husband uses it all the time.

@shopaholic: I got my Staub at a kitchen store in an outlet mall near Vienna. But I know that stateside, closeout places like Tuesday Morning or maybe TJ Max can sometimes have them.

We have both of those in Wusthof and it is AHmazing. My mom LOVES our cleaver, she's jealous. She even admitted it's better than the one she bought handmade from China!

@shopaholic: not a ton bc they're specialty knives. But we eat a lot of fish so we do use the fillet knife. And whenever we cook a whole chicken or I need to chop up pork bones for stock or during "sit month" my mom used the cleaver daily.
Def one of those to keep your eyes peeled for a good enough deal kinda thing. I've had good luck with Macys, Overstock. But I see Shun on Woot a lot so I'll keep my eye out for you!
