Yep, because I love it. I just don't like how people think pre-k teachers aren't "real" teachers. If only they knew all the standards we are held to and all the things we have to do...

Not really. I used to be, because I was still somewhat proud of myself for getting through law school and passing the bar and being so young (I became a lawyer at 23). Now I've been beaten down by the job and I'm likeā¦.. yea I'm a lawyer. It sucks.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Yeah, because I worked my way to where I am from answering the phones. I knew NO ONE in my industry and I literally sent resumes blind to firms from the phone book.

Sadly, what @Mae: said. I went to school an extra three years, left with six figures of debt and see people in other careers with only a bachelor's degree making the same amount of money but working less hours. I'm proud that I did it but, if I could go back, likely wouldn't take this career path.

@Mae: @LindsayInNY:
I'm very proud. I work in a kick-ass niche part of the law that is super nerdy.
papaya / 10343 posts
@LindsayInNY: Seriously. If I didn't go to law school I'd probably be making 15-20k less, but I'd have 70K less loans.

@MrsH: I'm proud to SAY that I'm a lawyer in title but that's it. I don't mind the area of law but I'm over the sub-par salary and too long hours.
bananas / 9229 posts
@Mae: My thoughts exactly. Whatever salary I would have without a law school would probably give me the same take home pay as my current salary less loan payments. I'm sure it'll be different once my loans are paid off but that seems eons away.

My job is too hard to explain! I usually try to avoid the question, or just say, "I'm in computers."
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
haha I'm not embarrassed but I don't know baout "proud" even after telling people my job no one really knows what I do.
An old joke around my department is "the hardest part about my job is explaining to others what I do." And it is true.

I am proud to share what I do although it's hard to explain. My title is superficial and doesn't help others understand what I do.

Not really, not ashamed either. It is a job to me. I don't love what I do AT ALL.

I'm proud but I also hate explaining I'm not a CPA (people hear "accountant" and automatically jump to public accounting...when I explain that I work in the private sector, they kind of go..."...oh...."). So it kind of tarnishes how I feel about it.

If you'd asked this a month ago I would have said no, but since my promotion I am super proud of my job and the work I do.

I'm proud of where I'm at, not necessarily details of job, etc. Since "consultant" is such a generic title, but I'm good at what I do and am progressing faster in my career than others, so that's what I'm proud of!
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Not really.
At my first job, when I told people what I did, they'd be all confused and look at me with a blank stare. I was a Risk and Business consultant.
Now, when I tell people I'm an IT auditor, they immediately scream "don't audit me!!!!". First off, I don't work for the IRS; and secondly, I said IT auditor. Now I do both IT and Operational auditing so I just say Internal Audit Manager, but people still freak and tell me not to audit them. Sigh.

not really. I "leaned out" in advance of having kids and basically got off the fast track. I'm not really using my MBA in the role I have now. but, I do have an amazingly flexible schedule and people are pretty jealous to hear that!

@sslm: pre k has some of the biggest impacts on future success!
@Mae: @LindsayInNY: my husband is a lawyer and my little sister in DC makes what he does as an assistant in a nonprofit!
I am very proud. But it's a little pointless to be as no one understands what I do! Saying I work for a think tank sounds pretentious, and saying I do tax policy research makes people think I'm an accountant.
pomegranate / 3863 posts
Yeah! I work in a small family owned business that my Grandfather started over 50 years ago. That is pretty rare these days and I'm very proud to help continue his dream! I'm also fiercely proud of the fact that I'm able to work with my Dad, sister, brother, BIL and my DH! And we don't want to kill each other!
honeydew / 7586 posts
Honestly, no. I love being a SAHM but I dislike telling people because of some of the judgment that comes along with it. Sometimes I even find myself saying, "I'm a teacher but I'm taking a few years off to stay at home." I hate that I care about what people think. I'm proud of what I do I just don't like telling people, if that makes any sense at all.

Very proud of what I do. I enjoy it a lot, mostly because it's a great fit for my personality and I really love helping people on a daily basis

@doxielove: Same here! I'm an accountant too, but not a CPA (which I have 0 interest in truthfully!)
Eh, I like my job, so I guess I would say I'm proud?
grapefruit / 4311 posts
First off no one really understands what I do, so I don't like trying to explain. Secondly, while I enjoy the work, I've always found work to be a means to an end. I'm not one of those people who lives to work.

Yep! I work for some demanding little bosses, but I love it.

I wouldn't use the word proud, but I really like my job! It's a blessing to do something I care about.

I guess so...? People often ask what I do all day or why I'm stressed so that's sometimes frustrating. I'm proud that I'm good at it but I think I haven't quite found the right niche within my field...maybe I'll be able to SAH before I get there
pear / 1879 posts
I am proud of what I do because of the personal change I made to get there. I left a directionless job to get my master's in a field for which I felt a "connection" and I worked hard while making my way through my program. While my current job is not exactly what I intended to do following my (clinical) training, I think I love it more than I ever thought I would.
The downside, sort of what @LindsayInNY alludes to, is that I am constantly surrounded by people who have fewer years of education (and probably much less debt!) but who make substantially more than I do. Obviously, I made the decision to go into this (lesser lucrative) field intentionally, knowing full well that it was not for the money, but I still do get down when I see my school loan balance going almost nowhere but my friends with less schooling getting ahead financially while I struggle. Clearly, this is all on me, but still hard some days.

@petunia354: that's awesome! do you mind sharing what kind of business he started that has withstood the test of time?
depends who i'm talking to, some people think it's awesome & that i'm so lucky, other people can be pretty mean about it. people (especially strangers, mostly mothers) feel oddly comfortable verbalizing their judgments about my work to me, i've been called a home wrecker (the first time it happened, i thought it was a fluke and the person was just crazy, nope, it's happened more than once), i've been told i get paid too much (really??? i don't announce my salary, who's to say i get paid too much?!), that i mustn't like using my brain or i'd go crazy doing what i do, that maybe i should think about getting a 'real' job. but i love my job and i'm sorry that not everyone understands how fortunate i am to get paid to fall madly in love with wonderful little people & get to watch them grow and then... i get to give them back and go home! i love my job even if not everyone reacts in a way that makes me feel proud of it, i'm proud of all the amazing little souls i've touched & the people they're becoming.
bananas / 9229 posts
@Periwinkle: It's kinda the opposite for me - I *thought* I was going into a lucrative career. Maybe without the loans but right now it seems far from that!

My job pays just barely above minimum wage and only required a high school diploma to get, but yes I'm very proud to say what I do! I love my job and work hard at it and I find much joy in it!
I have to back up and say that the seasonal position is only temporary, because I'm working hard for a promotion in the next couple of years to a year round position. I'm working hard to make this my career and I'm proud of it.
