Is this bomb cyclone snow storm affecting you? We are snowed in here in the Boston suburbs, schools and storms are all closed. DH was going to work from home anyway.
So far so good- my kids have mostly been playing well together for once and when they started fighting, it was nap time! And we managed to make it through the morning with hardly any TV so I feel good about turning on a movie after nap.
Just hoping we don’t lose power. School tomorrow is fifty fifty but losing power would suck!

Yep. I am not sure if it's even snowing anymore, or if the wind is just blowing everything sideways now.

Our snow isn't bad at all but our wind chill is so low that school has been cancelled for the rest of the week (teacher in Cleveland).

Yep. Still snowing here in the tristate (NYC/Northern NJ/CT) area. I'd say we've only gotten 5-6 inches so far where I am, but it's blowing around like crazy and roads aren't good. School was shut today and DH worked from home; not sure what'll happen tomorrow. It's supposed to only get colder, so ice may close the schools again.
My kids are alternating between playing nicely and going totally nuts. We're about to go out and play since winds seem to be temporarily dying down.

@PinkElephant: the wind is just starting to really kick up around here and it’s crazy. But coastal towns near me have it much much worse with flooding so I suppose even if we lose power I shouldn’t complain too much.
We definitely can’t play outside with the frigid cold and insane winds. Not only would it be miserable, I’d be worried about tree branches and stuff falling.

We have a snow day (teacher here) so I am home with LO and DH. We didn't actually get that much snow, but it was timed well to cancel school (during the morning commute). We are able to get out; DH took LO to the Y this morning, and I will take her to the library after nap time.

Yep! 2 inches down south and we already have 2 snow days. With below freezing temps I'm guessing we will be out Monday too. We don't function down here until it melts

Private preschool for us and they were open! I was shocked. So DS went and DH stayed home so he could drive us to and from (I’m 7mos pregnant and he didn’t want me walking or taking a cab on my own).

home with a 2 month old and my husband, he works for a college so they close. we have about 5 inches and thank god our heater was replaced yesterday

Hot water pipe just burst, gushing water into our garage 
But we got it to stop and the damage is minimal and we still have hot water so could be worse.

@Foodnerd81: oh no! Glad the damage wasn’t too bad but that’s such a pain! We are north of Boston and DH worked from home. He just started clearing off some of the roof where the snow drifts are severe feet high. The wind is just insane!

@tinyperson: Also in Toronto and I checked the weather network before leaving work and it said -13, feels like -24, and “ice crystals”. What does that even mean?!?! Also -34 overnight, UGH. I’d take the snow if given the choice. (Not to downplay the dump of snow you guys are getting, especially in places that lack the infrastructure to clear it!)

It takes a lot of snow to shut down things here—of course the bomb cyclone is hitting all the places not used to it!

We are in Atlanta Georgia. Not bragging here but I am so unbelievably surprised (and thankful) that we dodged a major bullet. No snow no ice at all, just below-freezing-temperature-for-a-week-already cold! Otherwise our schools would have been closed for 2 weeks as we panic and overreact on everything. Even Savannah (4 hours south) is getting snow / iced-in and having major road close. I am still in disbelief. I am so thankful because I can not handle another week-long school close right after the 1.5 week holidays we have just gone through.

Well my night got crazier- the pipe started gushing hot water again, took us what felt like forever to find the water valve shut off (probably half an hour of water just gushing into the garage). Once we got it shut off, frantically trying to find a plumber who could come out since we didn’t want to leave the water off to the whole house all night, considering the sub zero temps coming in. Of course most plumbers are slammed right now. But Facebook moms group totally pulled through and recommended a very nice plumber who came out a few hours later, fixed the pipe, got the system up and running again, and it didn’t even cost a fortune. And that fact that the burst pipe was in the garage and not in the House was HUGE.
So, all in all it totally sucked but could have been so much worse. School is closed again tomorrow, which is fine with me. My 4 year old has a crummy cold right now anyway so looks like a good movie day.

We got 16 inches of snow yesterday... I'm pretty much done with winter but know this is just the beginning.

Still snowed in today in Maine! We got about 16 inches and everything was closed down yesterday. My office is opening late today, so DH is outside trying to clear out our driveway so that I can get to work. Of course, this is coming on the tail of 2 weeks of subzero temps (has been -24 in the morning most days), and it's supposed to be back down into the negative numbers over the weekend. I'm ready for a view like @youboots!
@Foodnerd81: It's terrible that all of that happened during the storm, but it's amazing that you found a plumber to come out and fix it!!!

In places where schools are closed because of the cold, why? Is it because the schools heaters can't deal with it? They don't want to ask kids to go outside in the cold temperatures when they probably don't have appropriate clothing? I get snow closures but I don't understand cold closures.

@erinbaderin: I think it’s more like kids waiting for the bus outside or walking if they are walking distance. At least that’s what I had heard from my MIL who grew up in Chicago.

@erinbaderin: @Foodnerd81: probably all of the above re: closing for cold. My school didn’t close for cold, but Tues/Wed it was freezing in many parts of the school bc the old boilers couldn’t handle the low temps (or were not even working...)
@Foodnerd81: Sorry for the pipe chaos but it sounds like it turned out ok considering.
I have snow day 2 today, but my daughter’s preschool is open so I just dropped her off. Now I gotta try to be moderately productive so I don’t feel bad sending her!

@erinbaderin: I know in the district I grew up in about 50% of students walk to school so they close if it is too cold.

That makes sense, it just never occurred to me before this - there are so many things about how other regions handle weather that I never thought about. I have a friend in South Carolina who said that they didn't sell snow shovels in their stores, which...yeah, I guess that makes sense.

Schools are closed again today. We didn't get a lot of snow, but the wind is brutal. Today's real feel temperature is -7. I thought last week's single digit temps were bad. Ugh. The kids went back to school for one day this week, and I'm going slightly crazy at home.

@erinbaderin: Yeah, I agree with others regarding waiting for the sub. I live in northern MN and it's been averaging -20 degrees for over a week and upwards of -40 windchill at night. It's been insane! But, they haven't closed schools as we are probably used to it and parents just bring in their kids if they don't want them waiting for the bus.

@erinbaderin: American schools are grossly underfunded. Some areas haven't built new schools in decades, so you're dealing with boilers from 1960 and old distribution systems.
And don't forget, we have a lot of poverty in the US. In some areas, 50% of kids are on free or reduced lunch programs, which means there isn't a lot of disposable income for cold weather gear.

@looch: this. I’m in a low income building from the early 1900’s. The boilers can’t can’t keep buy and most of our students walk. With -20 windchill it’s a hazard.

@erinbaderin: I'm a teacher in Chicago and we have issues with school buses not starting when the weather is really cold. The buses that are working have to do multiple routes so kids often get to school really late. Not sure if that's also related to schools closing but maybe. In Chicago even when school is closed, they usually try to have some schools open for kids who need a warm place to go and who rely on school meals.

Snow day #2 over here! Lots of black ice on the back roads and it is unsafe for bus travel. My inlaws were stuck with us too. Lots of fun.

I'm working from home for the second day straight... really bad delays on public transit. If one of us was going to pick up the kids after work, we'd have to leave an hour early (and lose an hour in the AM to the commute). I'm impressed the system kept running through the storm yesterday, because we had a few hours of intense show and wind. Still, not getting on a train if I can help it... would rather spend the extra two hours working.
