Since the news story about the Foscam baby monitor being hacked into, DH is especially concerned about our Motorola video monitor. Last night he wanted to leave it off or cover the camera. Is he overreacting? I partly think he is overreacting but can't deny that it's totally unsecured to people within range and we live in an Apartment complex.

I'm not quite sure I understand the video monitors well enough. Our video monitor doesn't connect to the Internet, can it still be hacked?
I didn't get a foscam because I was worried about that from the start.
(Is foscam different than a regular video monitor? Haha clearly I'm uneducated on the topic)

@.twist.: ours doesn't connect to the Internet either, however other people nearby can pick up the frequency of our camera and see our LO's room. From what I understand it is almost like an open radio channel that others with a similar monitor can tune to

I'm not concerned, but that is because we have some sort of technology block in our house ( I think it is because of the "energy efficient" stuff). The monitor doesn't work outside of our front door (I have tried!), so I'm not worried at all.

My DH is super paranoid about this stuff and he's not worried, so I'm not worried. It's still so creepy to think about though.
@MamaBehr: That's a good point. The reception is pretty poor even on our back patio.

No, I'm really not.
I know it's possible that some creep could see him. But to hack into it they'd first have to figure out our obscure wireless password, then the username and very random, long password for the camera and figure out our obscure camera IP address and port number (which is not the default 80).
So it's possible (we've never had any problems with any neighbors seeing anything), but seems really unlikely. I feel like...I could still get into a car accident but I've strapped him in properly? I've taken every precaution I can, but at the end of the day I just can't stress about something that might possibly maybe happen. I try to protect my child as much as I can, but I can't raise him under a haze of "what-ifs" without losing my mind.

Not really...our picture isn't that great and it's at a weird angle. I think it would be pretty disappointing to anyone who managed to hack in..

@futuremrsmck: I completely agree. We have multiple passwords, etc, but the bigger picture is that I've taken as much care and effort to protect it (and him) as possible, and don't want to spend the rest of my time worrying about every "what might be" scenario.

I really wish the motorola one had some sort of password and no one else to pick up our camera other than us.

Not at all...I can't imagine that what they would see would be that interesting! Half the time we can't even see LO on the monitor because he rolls to the bottom part of the crib that's not in screen shot.
