Mine is not so good at figuring out puzzles. 
We are working on "that is an edge piece" and "match up the face" but I have a feeling she is not going to be a puzzle whiz in the future. lol - Even though she's not good at them, she still loves to do them, which is great.

DS is good at them and loves to do them
DD has never been interested in them so we don't bother - she will watch me and DS do them and say she wants to help but then does nothing

LO is 19 months and loves puzzles. He has several Melissa and Doug chunky puzzles and has been obsessed with them lately. He also plays a puzzle game on the Kindle. But we haven't tried any puzzles like you are describing yet!

She loves to do them, but she's not quite 2.5 so she obviously needs help on the harder ones. She can easily pick out the corner pieces, but has more trouble with the regular edge pieces. We have a few jigsaw puzzles that she's done enough times, she recognizes the pieces and can do those on her own--they are almost all 25 piece puzzles with big pieces.

LO1 enjoys puzzles a lot. I don't know if she's good. She can tell me what a corner piece is now at almost 3 but I don't think she understands what to do with it. She always puts the picture together first.

My older LO has never been interested and takes forever putting them together and loses interest quickly.
My younger LO is a whiz at puzzles (for her age). The first time she did one (wooden shape puzzle), she did the whole thing by herself and barely even looked at the pieces. She can put together more advanced ones with a little help.

My 2.5 year old is creepy good at them. Someone gave her a 12 piece jigsaw puzzle from Mudpuppy and she figured it out after a couple tries. I got her a few more similar ones, same thing. Went up to a 24 piece one, took her a bit longer but basically once she does it a few times, she can put them together in a few minutes. We're now looking for ones that are more complicated - little weirdo LOL.

I think it's mostly development and personality, but a possibility to be considered is eyesight. My 4yr old niece was horrible at puzzles until her eyesight was checked- turns out that she need bifocals at age 2.5, and patch therapy. Now she loves puzzles and masters them quickly.
