Hmmm - well our attitudes are generally the same but the way we think that works out politically differs, if that makes sense?

For example, I think homosexuality is sinful behavior. BUT, the libertarian in me thinks the government should stay out of marriage so I would say that gay marriage should be legal BUT I disagree with it personally. They would say that gay marriage should be illegal. There are other examples but that is the most obvious.

Otherwise I'm pretty on board with my parents - fiscally conservative, personally quite socially conservative. I think the governments biggest priorities should be our defense and also defending the rights of Americans and that's what important to me when I vote.

@Mrs. Pen: Exactly. I tend to keep the two quite separate.

@coopsmama: same here. We are minority on HB.

My views are very similar to my parents', but one of my brothers has completely different political views from the rest of the family. It makes for some fascinating discussions--we have very similar values, but totally different political views. My dad jokes that he doesn't know how he raised a kid who thinks so differently.

They're more moderate than I am. But we're not complete opposites or anything like that.

We have similar views. I'm more liberal than they are and by no means are they conservative.

My dad and I are both Democrats, and stay relatively well-informed. My mom intentionally avoids politics and has never voted in her entire life. It pains me to say this, and I'm a social studies teacher

My mother is moderate. My step mother and father (who I lived with) are super conservative. I'm very liberal.

DH is liberal from a family of liberal people. His dad still identifies as a hippy and is one of 4 registered greens in their district that includes a college town!

My only hope for DD is that wherever she ends up on the political spectrum, her views come from a point of compassion and respect.

My religious views are pretty much the same as my parents, but our political views are different. My parents are conservative, and I am definitely a lot more liberal.

@coopsmama: in GWs first run I heard the argument from conservative Christians that environmental awareness was akin to pagan worship of the earth instead of God . . . I'm not kidding at all. Then there was Ann Coulters famous quote of "“God said rape the planet – it’s yours. That’s our job: drilling, mining and stripping. Sweaters are the anti-Biblical view. Big gas-guzzling cars with phones and CD players and wet bars – that’s the Biblical view.”

Same -- very liberal, as are all of my extended family as well. DH's family has a lot more variation, though he and I are similar.

Nope. My sister and I had different views from our parents back in high school around 9/11. My brother had the same views as my parents.

I'm not sure if my parents still have the same political views as they did 10 years ago.

It depends on the parent. I probably align more with my dad who is democrat and liberal. My mom is not political at all, but her beliefs all align to her Catholic faith. I'm still Catholic but don't believe everything as literally as my mom.

@mamabolt: Yeah, my dad really scoffed at my opinions, told me repeatedly that I "just don't understand the real issues". Now we just don't talk.

I voted that I always had different views from my parents, from the time that I was old enough to form political opinions. My mom is apolitical and doesn't vote, but she generally agrees with the idea of wealth redistribution. My father is a Republican (he's rooting for Jeb Bush in the primary). I've been a Libertarian since the age of 14 or so. I know some people might not see a whole lot of difference between the two, but we disagree heatedly on:

- foreign policy (I'm a non-interventionist, he thinks it's our duty to police the world)
- gay marriage (he's against it, I think all marriage between consenting adults should be legal--ideally the gov't wouldn't be involved at all, but if it has to be, it shouldn't restrict it)
- abortion (we're both pro-life, but I don't think making it illegal is the path to cultural change)

There are a bunch of other things, but those are some prime examples.

We're all cut from the same liberal, Democrat cloth: me and my parents, DH and his parents.

@Maysprout: That just blows my mind! It's views like that that make me embarrassed to be a Christian - that is such a misrepresentation of the Bible!

I basically base my entire existence on being nothing like my parents in any shape way or form.
