The only name DH has suggested is Arkady (pronounced with a long a like cat, not short like Katie). We have a long German last name that is difficult for most to pronounce (but really not bad once you get it) and we are in Canada if that matters.

Noooo. The only Arkady Ive ever heard of was female.... and from a fantasy novel. Not a fan.

I just don't think anyone will pronounce, or spell, that right. The kid would be correcting people his entire life. Not a fan. Sorry.

Not a fan. It's too "out there" for me. And if your last name is long and difficult to pronounce I'd go with something short-ish and easy to pronounce for the first name.

It's an Eastern European name, so it *is* common elsewhere. If you or your husband want to honour a relative or it's from your culture - go for it. Otherwise it might be a little out there.

There's an Arkady on the show "the Americans " so it doesn't seem that out there to me but seems very Russian ( since the character is a soviet diplomat/spy). On the show, at least, the 2nd syllable is pronounced more like Katie than cat

I initially pronounced it like "Katie." If the pronounciation isn't obvious then that's usually my first red flag about it.

Thanks everyone! My initial reaction was to shoot it down immediately, but then I felt bad since it is the only name DH has come up with. I have similar concerns to what was already mentioned, so I'm glad I'm not just being mean saying no

@nana87: Ahhh that's where I have heard it! I knew I knew it from somewhere.

I know an Arkadi and an Arkady, so it's interesting that people think it's too different.
ETA: One of the Arkadis I know is named after his Russian grandfather. It's a Russian name.

It's an old Russian name... it was popular once, but pretty rare now. It's a good name, but I think a lot of people would be confused how to pronounce and spell it. Unless your husband feels strongly about honoring someone with that name, it's a handful to saddle a child with.

Even with your description on how to pronounce I'm still not sure, so as someone also that has a hard to pronounce long German last name I couldn't do that because the child would forever be description both names.

it's a nice name, but people will definitely mispronounce it. but that's a chance people take with a lot of names, so it's up to you guys how much it will bother you when people pronounce it ar-kay-dee.
