I read this article today and thought it was great. Its probably a lot of statistics you already know, but I admire the woman who is trying to make 'miscarriage' a more mainstream topic of conversation.
I'm not sure I'm ready to address my miscarriages head on like she has, but I hope I can be some day.

I love this.
I wish "infertility" in general was a less taboo subject. Something like 1 in 7 couples have trouble conceiving and/or experience a loss and yet it seems to be such a hush hush topic in our society.

@pui: Yes! I feel so embarrassed for some reason when I tell people we had and will always have to resort to IVF. But why???And its true what the author and its contributors said - people act so awkward when you do open up and tell them (if they haven't been through anything similar themselves). You can tell they are just thinking "TMI! TMI!"

@pui: And if infertility gets to be more normal, there is the idea or donors or surrogacy that will be taboo. It makes me very sad that it isn't an option in some cases because of it. At this point I have been part of every taboo. Yay me

I don't feel like that article does anything to help miscarriage to become more mainstream . . . I think most people choose to keep their fertility/family planning private, and for that reason don't talk about the loss in the same way they would the loss of another friend/family member.
What I really don't like is the contradiction that a miscarriage is "usually" caused by things beyond a woman's control . . . but then continuing on the list *contributing factors* without stating the significance, if any, of those factors . . . and then going further to say that the "best" way to prevent a miscarriage is for *women* to stay as "physically sound" as possible (which completely ignores the fact that men can *cause* miscarriages, too) *augh*

I'm on the fence about liking this article. I'm glad there is something out there to remind us that miscarrying is more common than you think. I thought it was 1 out of 5 but the article said that with 10 pregnancy - 1 to 2 will miscarry... why don't they just say about 1 out of 5?!
Also the part where they said miscarry is not the fault of the mom then list a ton of reasons it could be the fault of the mom... was weird!
Sorry maybe I'm just a complainer.

@Raindrop: 1-2 out of ten represents 10-20%, whereas 1 out of 5 represents 20%, which is a significant statistical difference.

@MsLipGloss: Could they say 3 out of 20? or do you think they are trying to keep the number fuzzy?
I thought I read once the miscarriage rate is actually higher than 1 out 5 because most people miscarry before 7 weeks and it's possible quite a number of women never realized they were pregnant in the first place.
