My ladies group has adopted a family for Christmas. I'd like to get the 5 year old a doll of her ethnicity. While we don't have much info on the family, we do have their names so that's why I'm leaning towards getting her an Asian doll. Any suggestions on where to find one? Or know of a good brand to scope out?

Do you know what their country of origin is? Personally as a kid I didn't like Asian looking dolls because none of them were cute and definitely looked nothing like me.. Just small-eyed versions of the more common versions of the dolls. That being said, I know there is probably a much larger variety out there now, 25 years later.

My daughter has a Corolle doll and loves it. They have all sorts of ethnicities (and boys!), you could look into those!

Cabbage Patch Kids also has Asian dolls, although they are harder to find. Check Amazon or Ebay?

@Raindrop: my DD has that baby Stella doll! Oddly enough she doesn't play with it all .. She plays with her bald baby dolls more and even volunteered to give it away, sniff...
I second American girl doll for an older child. I know a little girl who loves her Asian doll..it even comes with Chinese clothing

I used to order from one of these two websites for ethnic dolls to put in my dramatic play area for my preschool students. They are a big hit with the girls in class.

@mrs. wagon: Totally agreed! And why do all of the "ethnic" dolls have to wear "traditional" clothing? I'm asian american and I wear jeans and t-shirts on a day to day basis, not qipaos, hanboks, cheongsams, etc.

I was going to say American Girl dolls also. And when I was in the US a few weeks ago, I saw a really cute Asian Cabbage Patch Kid (boy) at Target. I almost got him for my neice, but he was one of the "newer" ones, and I wanted to get her an old-school ones I think.

@mediagirl: The doll has a cloth body and the eyes open and shut. When my 3.5 year old holds the doll, it is about as long as her torso. I wouldn't be too worried about her being five, because if she wants to play with tiny babies that one would totally work! And it smells like vanilla
