My babies are small so around 15 ish lbs. I don't see us moving into the convertible car seat anytime soon.
Oh, they are only about 25-26 inches tall.

T is 9.5 months and 20 lbs, but still plenty short to fit in the infant seat. We are still using it, but have started talking about getting a convertible soon. I hardly use it as a carrier because it's getting really heavy to carry! Realistically we will just keep using it until the day we are placed with a newborn, at which point we will panic and order a convertible on amazon prime!

We used the infant seat until they out grew it. My kids were on the small side. I loved the option to bring them places or inside the house with out waking them up.
Eta: over a year old for both

With DD we used the bucket beyond 1 year, maybe 13 months?
For DS we switched around 3 months. He just didn't like his bucket seat and is a big guy (99th%)

At 9 months, still in an infant seat. We switched around 11 months and she got much happier in the car.

@mfa_lady: Oh! DS can be quite fussy in his car seat nowadays. He has to be happy or at least distracted to be able to buckle him. Hmmm, I'll have to talk to DH about it.

LO 1 was in a convertible at 7 months. LO 2 used a bucket until 12 months and I am in no rush to move LO 3.

My big girls stated in convertibles. My youngest is still in the bucket but is so heavy that I'm entertaining switching her. Just trying to wrap my brain around carrying two babies to the car.

I had big babies and moved them to a convertible at around 7/8 months.

Not at 9 months, but we switched at 10.5, maybe 11 months? They weren't close to outgrowing their seats, but I was tired of dealing with the infant seats. Also, they hated their infant seats and were always so sweaty every time I got them out. Getting them bigger convertible seats helped a lot with them getting so sweaty because they don't hug their bodies as closely as the infant seats did.

@twodoghouse: ok this might change my mind about waiting till we get the call about a newborn. T gets so sweaty in the car and sometimes just seems uncomfortable in his seat.

I switched at 7/8 months. She was average size but would wake up when transferring the seat so it wasn't worth lugging around the extra weight anymore.

We switched around 5-6 months because she was heavy!! I hated lugging that thing around

@bluestriped bee: @mfa_lady: Same, my son was OK in the bucket seat, but usually discontented in some way. At 8/9 months we switched to the convertible and there was a major improvement. He literally got HAPPY to ride in the car. I think because he is higher up and can see out the window better. And it does seem more comfy, less curled up.

I felt like I was squishing lo in to the bucket at 9 months we switched. He was very big, and now about to outgrow his combi corcoro rear facing at 15 months. I guess I need to get a full sized convertible seat for him. I know I'll use the combi for number two but I should have just gotten a bigger one to start.

We're going to switch her before then. She's almost at the height limit and we're going on a road trip the weekend she turns 9 months. I want her to be more comfortable and less sweaty on the ride.

I had a big baby that he's quite quickly. He was too big for his bucket around 7 months

DD1 was in a bucket til almost two!! She was tiny and we didn't own a car.
DD1 switched around 15 months. She's taller and we had a car so it made sense.

LO1 was 29.75 inches at her 9 month appt and the max height was 30 inches, so we switched right after that.

My daughter switched at 9.5 months because she had less than an inch before outgrowing it. But my niece didn't switch until 18 months!
My daughter does about the same in the convertible. I was hoping she'd be more comfortable but she is still fairly fussy.

We switched both babies around 5-6 months. They both seem much happier in the convertible and definitely less sweaty.

We switched around 6-7 months. DS had reflux and was miserable in the bucket seat - apparently reflux babies are likely to hate them. We don't even spend that much time in the car but it was still night and day happiness-wise. He was on the bigger side, too (75% for height and weight).
watermelon / 14467 posts
Convertible. She was well within the height and weight limits but it was getting super heavy to carry and she was starting to look squished from side to side.
nectarine / 2765 posts
We used bucket seats til they were almost two! They didn't grow out of them until then (it was height, not weight that caused them to outgrow them). They didn't seem to mind the seats and they were so friggin convenient it was a bummer to switch to the convertible.
persimmon / 1310 posts
We switched at about 8 months, but she was getting crowded at about 7 months. I wish I hadn't spent the money on the infant seat.
pear / 1852 posts
I can't remember when exactly we switched, but it was close to the one year mark. I liked the infant seat because it was winter and I didn't have to struggle to get her buckled with the snow swirling behind me.
persimmon / 1322 posts
I switched her a month ago, at 8 months, in my car at least. I got a good deal on the convertible, so I bought it a few months ahead of my original plan. She hated the infant seat, so I figured I'd just switch her. She hates the convertible slightly less. We'll keep using the infant seat in my husband's car until she outgrows it, but she's only in his car once a month, if that.

Infant until 14 months or so! LO was petite and I saw no rush to go get the convertible.
cantaloupe / 6131 posts
Almost - we moved him at 10 months bc the seat was backordered. He still had about an inch in room and plenty of room weight-wise but it was close enough height wise where I wanted to move him, plus he was happier to be more upright. Bonus was our convertible seat took up much less front to back space than the bucket.
pear / 1548 posts
We moved him at 8 months due to height. He was 29 inches and only had one inch left at the top of his seat which meant he had outgrown it. Most kids outgrow seats due to height first, not weight.
pear / 1521 posts
We just moved at 15 months not because she had outgrown the seat but because she commutes with me and I wanted to see if the convertible helped cut down on crying in the car! It hasn't really
She's still sweaty too but I think that's more a problem with my car's air conditioning not cooling down the whole car rather than the seat.
nectarine / 2152 posts
Infant seats until 14-16 months (one outgrew the infant before the other!). Much much easier to install and use than the convertibles, I think.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
Convertible. DD isn't a big baby but she hated the bucket seat.
