DD is 21 months and I've started asking her what she did at daycare that day. She always replies "babies!" then usually follows up with "blankie" or "night night." She's probably telling the truth, since 90% of her day is usually spent putting dolls and stuffed animals to sleep. But I can't tell if she actually understands the question (and the past tense!). I can't wait until she can tell me more! So I'm just curious - when did your LO seem able to truly answer "what did you do today?"

I never bothered to ask that question, because I don't think they really know what to answer. Instead, I ask about who was in school that day, what they had for snack, etc. My son is 6 and if I ask him what he did he'll say nothing, but if I ask him what he did in World Language, he'll tell me all about the theme for the week.

DD is 28 months and each night she can give me a run down of what we did that day. Not a lot of details but some basics. I'd say it's been in the past month. Don't get me wrong, some days she makes up silly things or tells me things from days ago. Most nights it's pretty accurate though.

DS1, at six, is usually pretty good about it now. But he struggled to tell me what he did during the day until this year. Before that , he would just say 'I played with my friends and ate lunch'. DS2 is almost 2, and can't answer the question yet...but when we pull up to his preschool/daycare in the morning he is always either saying "yay" or "oh no! depending on his mood.

@catgirl: I have a 28 month also; since I get a sheet from the teacher telling us what they did, I can match it up and see if she's telling the truth. Sometimes she def makes stuff up

My oldest, who will be 4 in July, still can't answer that question. Or doesn't want to answer it.
If I ask her specifics based on what I already know about her day (I go by the weekly newsletter), then I can get her talking. So I'll ask, did you get a new song today? Was it a song about monkeys? How did it go?
Did you get new centers this week? What were the centers? Which center did you pick?
Miss Ashley told me the new word is "new". How do you spell new? How do you use it in a sentence? etc.
Otherwise, she just tells me "nothing!" if I ask her the general what-did-you-do-today question.

@Anagram: my daughter will be 4 in July and same experience here! If I ask specifics I can get good answers but if I asked what she did during the day she says I don't know.

Maybe around 2.5? DH asks her every night at dinner what she did. It started out being 50/50 whether she was accurate but now at three will almost always say what we actually did. Now she loves to ask DH what he did at work, too!

I think my 3 year old could answer the question but he won't. If i ask he says, "nothing." Sometimes I ask him more specific questions using info the teachers probbise about the day (on his take home sheet and on the class info board) but he usually says "I don't know." If I catch him in the right mood though, he will tell me all kinds of stories about the day, so I know he CAN do it.

DD is 25 mo and has good language skills and I really don't expect this will be for awhile. I agree with specific questions. She will talk about toys and friends.

LO is 3.5 and still doesn't answer this question well - she will usually say, "Play," or "I cried for you," depending on if it was a good or bad day, ha.
She does much better answering specific questions or now at 3.5 she can tell me what her favorite and least favorite things were - but your LO is probably still too young for that. She could maybe answer, "What made you really happy today?" or something.

I don't ask broadly what he did today but I ask "what did you learn" (there's usually a theme each week/day) "who did you play with" and more specific questions like that. He's 2y8mo and can answer pretty clearly.
He's also started volunteering the info when I'm tucking him in for his nap which I love -
@Dahlia: i have been asking my 5 year old this question since she was about 3. I think the day is quite long for them so only a few things stand out for her. I will have to prompt her about specific things to jog her memory such as asking what she did at playtime or what snack she had etc

My son was about 4 when he started telling me. lol Before then his answers were, "played with kids" "ate food". Now he says names and more details about his day. He understood what I asked, but I don't think he knew how to express it. I asked everyday and now he knows how to express himself better.

My daughter is 2.5 and can usually give a decent answer. It's typically only a snippet of the day and occasionally as she keeps talking she'll add in stuff about other days that might be similar (like we went to the museum and did X and Y but Y was really from last time we went.)

Sometimes I even get "I don't want to talk about it!" ETA, not in a depressing way just like an I dot want to be bothered this conversation isn't fun as other things we could be doing.

DD is nearly three, and just became better at sharing this information in the last few months. We usually have to give her some prompts, like "We heard you did x today. Was that fun?" As soon as we mention a specific task or activity she'll answer our basic question and give us some more information.

DH asks DD most every night if she had a good day with mama & what she did today. She's almost 23mos & has been pretty good at describing things about her swim lesson, activities or a trip to the store in 2-3 word phrases... though she does always say we bought oranges & that's often not true. Lol!

DS is 25m and very verbal, and he's got maybe 50% accuracy at this point.
