I feel like if you have a mature 3 year old, that would be an okay time to start. We do Suzuki method and they can start piano at 3 if they are ready. 4-5 would definitely be fine to start also if your child is older.

I'm sure it depends on the kid, but a handful of the people I know who are above average at piano started at age 5. I also started at age 5 - my mom says I begged her for lessons - and it worked out well for me!

I've heard several music teachers say it's helpful to be able to read first, to help with music reading. So 5-6 probably. I'm hoping to start around her 6th bday, she'll be 5.5 at start of kinder but I'm hesitant to start anything new then.

My Mum is a registered piano teacher and she generally doesn't take on students until they're at least six or seven. In her experience a child who's slightly older picks it up much faster due to having better cognitive skills plus better numeracy and literacy, and most kids are at the same level by the time they're eight regardless of when they started.

I started Suzuki at age 5 and I grew up with friends who started at 4. They always seemed to have benefited from starting earlier!

I started my daughter this year at 4. She's doing great and having fun.

You can start at 5 but they are still really wiggly and don't usually have a good attention span. So unless you think your could is ready, I would wait. Also, the younger they are, the more you need to practice with them every night. I like starting students at 6 or 7. If you want to do music before that, I think Music Together is an actual class that introduces rhythm instruments and singing as a general music readiness program.

I actually just asked a reputable music school here what the ideal age is and they said 5. They offer lessons before that but she was being honest and said she really doesn't think it's worthwhile till at least 5.

My mother and I both taught and played music, and I really think 5-6 is a great age to start piano lessons, but that it would be great to do some group music classes like music together or gymboree music before that. That is what I plan to do with my daughter. She is 2 now and I sit with her at the piano and let her bang on it sometimes.

My daughter's teacher has a strict rule that she does not take students before age 6...my daughter was almost 7 and it was a great time to start!
