I only ever grew up with "grandma" and "grandpa" (on both sides) so my in-laws obsession with this topic is strange to me.

weird! i only had grandma/grandpa so i've never even thought about it. no advice - but it might be a tough battle if they persist and tell your kid(s) to call them those names when you're not there anyways.

My mother in law insisted on being called a specific name once she found out we (me and SIL at same time) were pregnant. Now that the babies are here she has realized it didn't stick and even though we use the name, she never does. I say just appease her for the time being but don't buy any monogrammed sweatshirt ps just yet.

no advice, but thought i'd share that in cantonese, the mother is "mama" and the paternal grandmother is "mahmah." we can hear the difference, but it probably sounds the same to other people.

what the kids call their mom and their grandma might sound similar, but it's not like anyone ever confuses the two.

We let the grandparents choose their names, even ones we don't agree with (like my mom wanting Nonna when Step-MIL wants Nana). I wish my parents would've been Mimi & Poppop, but I don't think it's my call. Your LO won't be confused about who Mom & Dad are, regardless of of similar grandparent names are.

As a side note, I really don't understand when people say the grandchildren decide grandparent names. I learned my grandparent's "nicknames" from my parents & that's what I called them. I get that young children have trouble with pronouncing certain words, but I wouldn't let my LO grow up forever calling a dog a "dah". I'm going to teach him all sorts of words, so why wouldn't I teach him grandparent names?
