Very tragic. I hope there are more answers soon.

@FliegepilzHut: I don' t think they know much yet. This is the best I could find. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/suspected-killer-in-ottawa-shootings-had-a-disturbing-side/article21252419/

@oliviaoblivia: I think i'm more surprised that people aren't more freaked out about it, especially since it came after an ISIS threat to Canada after we sent troops over. I have to say though, i'm proud of how CBC covered the story - CNN, Fox News and other US new outlets have a lot to learn on covering tragic events like this one.

@Freckles: The UNC academic scandal is on the front page of CNN right now.

@Freckles: oh i didn't know about the ISIS threat. the article i just posted said an ISIS twitter account posted a photo of the shooter though so it seems they are taking credit for his actions. you'd think they would've been on a wider scale if that were the case. really disturbing though.

There was the hit and run in Ottawa a few days ago. The guy who drove his car into the car of 2 soldiers had converted to Islam a year ago and was very pro ISIS.
Right now many believe the shooting was an act of terrorism, but i know not much has been confirmed yet.

I'm just seeing this (it wasn't anywhere on my social media and we don't have TV)! This is horrible.
Hugs to all in Canada.

I'm catching up on it now. I did see the breaking news texts come in yesterday but didn't have the time to read about the details. I caught up late last night.
So scary for Canada folks.

Been following this story obsessively... was so shocked because it seems like something more likely to happen in the US versus Canada!!
Hope our Canadian bees are doing ok... so scary!

Meant to post on this thread yesterday but I was sick so kept forgetting. This is awful and I strongly hope that it is not terror related but cannot help but think that the two incidents where soldiers were killed in two days have to be connected in some way. Just horrific.

What gets me is I see so many people on my FB acting like this ISN'T a big deal. CANADIANS are saying this! WTF!?
This was an attack on our parliament building. The man shot and killed was a soldier. Our Prime Minister was on Parliament Hill at the time. This is a pretty big deal. I think Canadians should absolutely feel affected by this.
If this happened at the White House I don't think anyone would be saying this isn't a big deal.
No it doesn't compare to the loss of life of the Boston Marathon or 9/11 attacks, but it's still tragic and very scary. I also agree that the media always over blows everything but c'mon... to say we shouldn't care about this at all is just nuts to me.
pear / 1787 posts
@pui: yes the magnitude of loss is not the same but the significance is, in my mind. i've seen some people saying to "move on" and "get over it" and that infuriates me. if this single shooter was more organized or more connected, it could have been an even more horrendous tragedy. an attack on our government is a HUGE deal and it is really saddening that some Canadian's don't realize that. I'm right there with you.
@MrsKoala: yes after reading the article Freckles posted I'm having a hard time thinking it's anything but terrorism. very frightening.
bananas / 9899 posts
@loki: I just can't believe it. Someone on my FB posted this whole thing about how we should just be over it by now and it already has 53 "likes". While I'm not saying we should go overboard, I think it's sad that many Canadians are acting like a shoot out in our parliament building is just no big deal. Sometimes we're self-effacing to a fault.

I wasn't really on the internet at all yesterday (I've been trying to have more off-line time) so I only saw a few statuses from the couple Canadian friends I have on fb. I can't speak for everyone, but not commenting here didn't mean I didn't care, I just wasn't on.
Horrible. Late last night I finally saw a news link pop up about the killed soldier. So, so sad.

@pui: wow... people need to have a little respect. even if you feel that way, no need to take to facebook to get support. i'm sure Cpl Cirillo's family would not appreciate that. i'm also seeing an uncomfortable amount of hate speech, which disgusts me and makes me ashamed. We are supposed to be an accepting, diverse culture and just outright blaming Islam is disgusting. I deleted a girl this morning for an OUTRAGEOUS post about this. There were 100+ comments and i didn't get a lot of them but this particular girl is super hot and the support she was getting for her ignorant views made me sick.

@Freckles: the hit and run was in our neighbouring province of Quebec. Tragic all the same.

I posted the article Freckles posted above plus one about the hit and run in Quebec and I'm getting responses from people mocking me with hastags like #Illuminati and #InsideJob
Seriously WTH! I'm just posting facts.
I'm pretty pissed now.

@Freckles: don't apologize!
That National Post article you posted makes me feel sick to my stomach.

@pui: i would go on a deleting rampage if i were you!!!! i'm sure if their family members were affected, they would be singing a different tune!
@Ocean girl: ugh i know, i felt the same way

I heard the story this morning on NPR - about the guy who drove his car and killed one soldier and injured another, followed by the shooting at the Parliament. It made me sick to my stomach and my immediate thought was of my Canadian HB friends. Sending hugs to all of you and your families.

Yesterday was pretty terrifying, even in Toronto. Just knowing the TTC had stepped up security, and the library I go to at lunch had armed police inside and were turning people away, probably not connected but it felt weird. I can't imagine how scary it must be to be in Ottawa right now.

@pui: @loki: as someone who's still dealing with issues from the Boston Marathon, seeing this triggers my anxiety. My heart is with Canada just because it's not your backyard doesn't mean it's not a big deal.

The whole situation is all I can think about, I feel like this is just the beginning, and that we will face a lot more tragedy in the name of causing fear here. We have been so lucky in Canada, but I think our time has come.

@MsMini: unfortunately i think you're right : (
@travelgirl1: i work in TO and was home sick yesterday... i think i also would've been scared to see the extra security on the TTC etc.
@rachiecakes: so sorry you're still struggling, i hope you find peace
coconut / 8279 posts
@MsMini: @loki: There are lots of good people too. Especially those who go to work every day to protect us, not knowing what they are going to face that day. I always think about them, and their families.
pear / 1787 posts
@rachiecakes: ya the video of the parliament from yesterday really drove that home to me. this madman was unleashing gunfire and all these police officers were running towards it. i could never have the courage and i am SO GRATEFUL for those who do. it is really remarkable. and people really pull together in these times. all the love for ottawa on twitter really warmed my heart! and as i said in another message, the Penguins playing our national anthem made me tear up!

@loki: I had DH pick up DD and me yesterday. I was worried about taking TTC. Probably paranoid but I just couldn't take her there yesterday.

@rachiecakes: @loki: So, so true. I spent the whole day thinking where I should avoid taking the girls, whereas for many people, they have to
put themselves in the heart of the places we're scared to visit.
@MsMini: Yes, I feel like Canada is a nice, safe, friendly place to live that doesn't cause many waves in the world at large, but it feels like times are changing.

I think its important to remember that an act of terror is any act that terrorises people. It doesn't have to be perpetrated by radical muslims in order to be labelled an act of terror. Whoever turns out to be behind this, I think it's safe to say that it has been effective. Granted I am extra sensitive and interested because I'm actually from Ottawa, but all the way here in Australia security has been stepped up, people are talking about it non stop (all my grade 8 students knew about it, and were asking me questions cause they know I'm Canadian), and all the war memorials here in Sydney have been closed to visitiors. If terror is what these people were after they've gotten it, even all the way on the other side of the world

So scary and sad. I have several friends in Ottawa and was relieved when they posted/texted that they were ok.
