Just curious, did anyone's LO try and put the lights in their mouth? I want to try but LO puts everything in his mouth and I don't want to electrocute my baby.

@littlek: I bet you all of our LOs tried to put the lights in their mouths. DH was on light-in-the-mouth duty, so there are many photos with his hand in it.

@littlek: Yep, mine really wanted to eat it. Constant vigilance!

I love all of these! Okay, here is our attempt. Definitely not like pinterest but not terrible either...
ETA: they are all still kind of blurry? I took 800 photos! I'm glad I'm not a photographer....I skipped the white canvas and tripod though.

@Mrs. Pen: Love!!!!! Did you use any editing on that? You take a lot beautiful photos.

@HLK208: thank you it's a fun hobby. And yes- I edited in photoshop by lightening it, adding some color, and making some of the lights sparkly.
Yours totally turned out cute too!

@stiffaknee: that lighting is perfect! I never thought to try a darker lit picture!

@jennylynn: omg how perfect is that! Gorgeous! It's so professional; are you a photographer?

@Mrs. Pen: I envy those who are photoshop savvy! If I ever have time/money, I want to take a class!

@HLK208: yeah it took quite a bit of time to get it down and it's still a learning process but a few tips, tricks and shortcuts go a long way! do you have the program? I can give you some pointers. I'm thinking of writing a blog post on some simple editing techniques

@Mrs. Pen: I would that too. Esp since we are buying a DSLR as our Christmas gift to each other so we have time to learn how to use it before baby gets here.

@Mrs. Pen: I didnt have space to really set up a background and was really hoping to get the lights to "pop", so I turned off all the lights and lowered my shutter speed and increased my ISO, but I was missing something (my photographer friend said a certain type of flash would have done it) so I ended up keeping all the lights off and going with a pretty fast shutter speed...I feel like it almost looks like she's sitting in front of a fire!
@littlek: The lights kept going in her mouth-I was really worried and wasn't going to post our pictures on hellobee because I thought I'd get scolded-apparently the wiring has lead in it, so its probably safer to use them as a background. I wrapped them with some red metallic garland and just kind of piled it in front of her and tried to keep her distracted.

Here is a new tutorial that was posted about achieving these pictures! I think the biggest thing is to try to keep them 6-8 feet from the backdrop!

@mrsjazz: @Smurfette: I will get on that! it might take me a little while though - it will be a pretty involved post haha.

@HLK208: How cute! I love the headband and bow tie!!!
@Mrs. Pen: Thanks! I'm not really a "photographer", but I've been studying up and practicing in hopes of maybe someday being good enough to make a little extra cash with it. Thanks for the compliment though

@Thehistoryofus: that's a great tutorial! However I doubt any of us have that fancy equipment haha! I have noticed my stumbling block is definitely my lack of lenses for my SLR. I only have my basic kit lens, which has an aperture of 4 I think and I really wanted an aperture of 1.8! That would help a lot.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@Mrs. Pen: I am going to try to follow the tutorial with my 50mm f/1.8. I will let you know if it makes a difference. I also don't have a light reflector or flash but we do have a porch that gets some good natural light.

@Thehistoryofus: YES! I'm home with LO today, we're doing a reshoot based on this tutorial. Thanks!
@Mrs. Pen: I can wait...but I would like to take some cute Valentin's Day photos

@Thehistoryofus: use tin foil just tape some on a piece of cardboard and it's a light reflector
pineapple / 12234 posts
@Thehistoryofus: I used that lens! It did make a difference but I think mine would have looked better if we had natural light coming in.

@mrsjazz: Good luck! One thing I noticed in your pictures you posted was that it looks like for some reason you camera is focusing on that stuffed animal rather than the face. Sometimes I have to go in and manually select where in the frame for my camera to focus and it helps a ton!

This is too funny. I took the same photos over the weekend. I got lucky and he fell asleep during them. I used my 50 mm/1.8 lens to achieve the blurry lights in the background.

@mrskc: so precious! I should try some photos when she's sleeping.
@Thehistoryofus: thanks. I started to set up and changed her into an outfit but now she's super cranky!

@HLK208: What a gorgeous smile out of your baby girl

@HLK208: thank you. I have a canon rebel xsi and I used the 50mm f/1.8 lens. Setting the aperture low achieves the bokeh.

@mrskc: ah, I have the same lens but my photos don't look as clear and pretty as yours! You're a good photographer!

@HLK208: Thanks. I just learned back button focus which has helped me get my photos more in focus. Or try setting which focus spot you want the camera to use. I also like to over expose my photos. It makes them look brighter.
