! I love Ava, DH loves Ellie, although her birth name would be Elle. I'm concerned Ellie may be a bit too southern, and I prefer more trendy names. Also, I don't mind popular names, I'm a Ashley, Brittany, Jessica, or Jennifer. The world is big enough for another Ava 
. Middle name is Joann, but we will never say her full name on a day to day basis so I'm not as concerned with flow. Last name ends in -ley. Help!!

I loooooooooooooove Elle. I think it's classic and beautiful! And Ellie is such a cute nickname. But I know a ton of Avas and names that are too popular aren't my thing. That isn't an issue for you but I still prefer Elle

I love Ellie/Elle. I wish I could use them name but we just an Ellis born into the family (boy) and DH says it's too close for his comfort.

I was all ready to vote Ellie until you mentioned your last name ends with -ley (so does mine). Ellie is too matchy matchy sounding to me, if/when we have kids I'll be avoiding -ley ending names.

I voted for Ava, just because of the repetition on Ellie with a last name that ends in -ley. That's my hang up though.

I love Elle. Elle Harper was a top contender for us if B would have been a girl. I'm not a huge fan of Ellie though.
Ava is also beautiful! I think I prefer Ava in combination with Joanne.

@dc yoga bee: I haven't a clue what your last name is, but for fun... Ellie Brentley, Elle Brentley, Ava Brentley. They all sound good to me. Still vote for Elle/ Ellie.

I love them both but slightly prefer Elle. But if your last name ends in "-ley" then I think that might sound a little strange with Ellie so then I'd prefer Ava.

Well, my name is Ellie and I've never even been to the south so I don't consider it southern at all.
Since you're considering Elle which I love LOVE I don't think the last name is an issue. I voted Ellie but not just because it's my name -- I'm just over Ava even though I do really like that name as well. I've just heard it a LOT.

I'm from California and I don't think of Ellie as Southern. I think it's kind of trendy.

@dc yoga bee: I honestly don't think the P last name issue would be a big deal. I don't think kids would associate that at all and I would never have thought of it unless you brought it up. I think it's one of those things that you don't overthink until it's first brought to your attention.

I called DH, and he laughed and laughed, and said wow we hadn't thought of that. But he's a good man. DH is from ATL, so I'm sure our friends would have tons of jokes. He's fine with going with Ava for that reason, but I don't know. My maiden name rhymes with Menace, and I didn't really get teased like the movie growing up. @coopsmama: maybe you're right! I won't cross it off just yet!

I've heard too many people name their kid Ava (although it's still a beautiful name) lately to vote that way. Plus I really like Elle/Ellie. I went by a -y nickname as a kid, and grew out of it in my teen years. So the matchy matchy name might not even be an issue for her as an adult.

what about Eva or Evie? Kinda a combo of Ava and Ellie! Although, Eva is still a bit too popular for my tastes so Evie is my favourite!

I use to be friends with an Elizabeth, nicknamed Elle (spelled that way) but pronounced Ellie.

i struggled so much with the name Ava - loved it so much but was just so popular. And I have no problem with common name but it was just a little too popular - but we went for it anyway. Our compromise was we gave her a middle name that we loved as well so she could choose to go by her middle name if it bothered her too much - so our baby's name was Ava Quinn. My husband is a William and grew up with a bunch of Williams (and all the various nicknames) and he said it never bothered him.

I like both, but really like Ava--no matter how popular it is. Elle is beautiful, so if you are only concerned about the nn not going well with your last name, maybe it's still ok? She can always choose (later) to go by her given name & not nn. Growing up everyone called me my nn, but I never went by it at school or elsewhere.
