What is the cut off in your state?

My son is a December birthday, and if all goes to plan he will be 4 years 9 months when he enters kindy next year. The cut off in my state is Dec 31.

We did sort of purposely aim for our babies to be born between January and May for various reasons, namely school age. We got April and February.

I have a September baby so she's going to be one of the oldest in her class. Sept 1 is the cutoff here. We didn't take it into account when TTC. I figure someone has to be right on the cutoff, so I'm not worried about it.

The cutoff in my state is October 1, so my daughter will be nearly six when she starts kindergarten (her birthday is October 7, so we just missed it by a hair). I did not purposefully plan that, but I wish it wasn't like that. I wish it was more like @looch: said and the cutoff was Dec 31.

I'm due on January 1. My c-section is scheduled for Dec. 29. Dec.31st is the cutoff here. I debate pushing back my surgery so DD1 is two years ahead of DD2 instead of one, but delaying risks other complications.
I wish I had an answer for you but I'm really struggling with this myself.

My LO was born at the end of November. The state cut-off for school is mid-September. I was always the youngest in my class (my birthday is in mid-August) and hated it, so I'm glad LO will be among the oldest in his class. I'm not concerned about sports or whatever, but he's physically small, and while I'm sure he'll do well academically, it will be nice to give him the chance to be a bit more mature before school. We'll do preschool before that, but he will be almost 6 before starting K.

I didn't plan on having a kid with a December birthday, but time wasn't on my side in terms of skipping any months, lol. As far as I can tell, it doesn't suck that much for him, lol.

Well, all I can say is things change When LO was born my state's cutoff date was October 15th, her birthday is October 1st. But they have since switched it to July 15th. Our next baby is a spring baby, but I wouldn't have changed my TTC dates based on that because you never know how long it will take you to get a BFP.

Our cut-off is 8/31 and LO is a Nov baby, so he'll be one of the oldest. When I was a kid, the cut-off was 10/15 and I'm a Sept baby, so I was always one of the very youngest, but it never bothered me. Eh, being a pre-k teacher, honestly all kids are different and it's hard to say. My kids have to be 4 before September to be in my class. My first student turned 5 last week and he's honestly not one of the ones I thought would have been the oldest.

However, one of the reasons we are waiting until December to TTC is so that #1 and future #2 will be 2 grades apart in school.

@78h2o: yeah I'm in Canada. We have the same tax year debate as well. It's a tough decision. Financially having her Dec. 29th is way better.... Tax deduction and a year less in day care. But she will be one year and 51 weeks younger than #1 but only one school year behind. That feels like a crummy thing to do to #1.

As a teacher, I can tell you that no parent has ever regretted holding from enter K when their birthday was near the cutoff. I can also tell you that an overwhelming number of students needing intervention or learning support have birthdays where they could have been held back for one more year, but were sent to K as a very young 5 year old. Just some food for thought.

@oliviaoblivia: I was a scheduled C-section baby and born Dec. 31st my parents definitely took advantage of the tax deduction, lol.

@oliviaoblivia: hmm, that is tricky. Might be totally fine though... so hard to know! I know some siblings that are 1.5 apart and loved being just a grade apart, but I see what you are saying.

Interesting. I have the exact opposite worry. LO was born May 27th and I worry about him being too young!

We have Sept daughter who misses the cut off in our town by 10 days. When we were TTC I didn't know the cut off / didn't even think about this at all, but now I wish we had at least just skipped Aug/Sep due dates.

I'm not really worried about her being the oldest in her class, what bothers me is that we will be paying an entire extra year's worth of daycare because of TEN days. Since we definitely can't afford more than 2 kids in daycare at once we are probably done after baby #2...because we'd have to wait for DD #1 to be in kindergarten (at age 6) before having #3.

We are expecting a lo this October and the cutoff is September 1 here. I dislike that for her kindergarten year she will basically be 6 the whole time but when you think about it, kindergarten now is basically what 1st grade was when we were little. On top of that, in our district at least, red shirting is so common that she won't even be one of the oldest, a huge percentage of kids with summer birthdays here get held back so there are likely to be a handful of kids with earlier birthdays.

I do wish the preschool situation would change though, originally I planned to put our kids in at 3 but that means three years of preschool! Not to mention finding one that will offer any academic challenge here for under 12k a year even for half days is so hard! I hope something changes in the next three years...

My birthday was the day after the cutoff, but they let me go ahead because I was so advanced already. My mom still isn't sure if it was the right decision, because emotionally I've always been behind, but I was so advanced that even in "gifted" classes (what they called it) I was frequently bored. It's not something we're worrying about, though since we're planning to homeschool it isn't really an issue.

My LO is end of September & cutoff is September 1. It didn't factor into our ttc plans at all.. It is what it is.

@oliviaoblivia: I was two years younger than my brother and one grade behind. He did a transitional K-1st program. He blames all his life problems on it, but all-in-all, I don't think us being one year apart made any real difference. Other than that he was an awful student (behavior-wise) so I always had to prove to my teachers that I wasn't awful... But I don't think a year would have made a difference there.
