DD2 was on prescription cream at one month. I use it occasionally when I see the signs of a flare up. Most of the time it's kept at bay with aquaphor.

It was pretty bad when we got the script but cleared up overnight with the cream. It was amazing. Now we are just maintaining healthy skin.
Poor thing had dry patches every where and cracks and bleeding on her face.

My child has eczema related to food allergies. It gets so bad that it breaks open and gets bloody and weepy I made some salve for her and it's been helping. It's so hard to get rid of thoigh!!

@MarieJ: ya our ped still isn't too keen on a RX. She prescribed us one but said only use it for 5 days at a time and it did absolutely nothing.

This is like 1 hour difference with the salve I made. I mean it's not all the way gone, but we are actively working on it. Seriously I think her friends mom's at gymnastics think she has leprosy or something. I feel bad

My LO has had eczema since he was a baby as well (now 2 yrs old). Our allergist recommends this method for bathing : http://www.nationaljewish.org/healthinfo/conditions/allergy/types/eczema/lifestyle-management/soak-and-seal.aspx

We use only cetaphil gentle as soap and johnsons baby shampoo for shampoo. Vanicream for lotion (less greasy than aquaphor and works better for us). When we first started really treating it it worked well to do the bath, put tons of vanicream on, and then put long sleeve pj pants and shirt on, slightly dampened in the bad areas (like behind the knees).

If it keeps getting bad maybe consider a visit to an allergist. They know a lot about eczema. I wish I had known all of that but our first visit was unfortunately after LO ate peanuts for the first time and reacted.

My DS had eczema until he was 4.

Our allergist had us doing a cool bath and afterwards when still damp slather him in Vaseline and put on cotton pjs - it was the only (non prescription) way that kept it at bay.

@MarieJ: I'm surprised your ped won't subscribe anything. Both my kids were given prescriptions for their eczema before 3 or 4 months. Xander was also referred to a dermatologist for his.

We use desonide cream or ointment (prescription) and it works WONDERS. It's only a step stronger than over the counter hydrocortisone. If your ped won't subscribe anything, I'd suggest using either the hydrocortisone ointment OR using the hydrocortisone cream and sealing it in with aquaphor on top (that's what we do with our desonide cream).

ETA: Also - give baths sparingly (2-3 times a week) in very lukewarm water. And we use Aquaphor baby wash and shampoo - it's VERY gentle.

@MarieJ: you're welcome! Apparently there is a huge range of recommendations. Our ped had us bathing once a week for awhile! The allergist is the one who recommended the longer daily baths and it has seemed to help, for our guy at least. Hope your LO gets some relief.
