I personally would not vaccinate while a child is sick - especially if the child is running a fever. Personally I think it's best for their immune system to be functioning as well as possible before receiving the vaccine although I know some say it doesn't make a difference. If you have the time to run in for separate appointments, to me it would be worth it.

FWIW, I went in for my 32 week appt last week and had shingles. My nurse asked if I wanted the tDap at that appointment and then corrected herself and said, "oh wait, you're sick. Probably best not to get it this time anyway. We can do that at the next appointment."

But really, you need to do what you're comfortable with as the parent.

Our doctor won't vaccinate if the baby has a fever. She will delay. This is something you could talk to the pediatrician about today.

Your pediatrician will be able to tell you if you should delay or not. Usually if they have a fever, they'll suggest delaying, because many vaccines cause a fever themselves. But if it's just a common cold, they'll often leave it up to you to decide.

I always just go ahead and vaccine even if my kid is sick because it's required for daycare and I don't want to have to make a second trip. Especially once they are already IN daycare, they are sick constantly anyway, so if I delayed for a cold, they'd never get vaccinated!

What @winniebee: said- I would wait a week just to make sure he's feeling good before vaccinating, since that can make them feel a little crummy. Plus if he got a fever I would want to know if it was a reaction to the vaccine or because he was sick. FWIW we just had our 6 month visit and while the baby is healthy, my toddler and I are both sick, and my pediatrician asked if I wanted to wait until everyone was better just in case she was fussy since I needed the break. (I did it anyway since she was healthy and we've been to the ped office 6 times in three weeks and I didn't want to go back!). All this has nothing to do with autism.

Also when my baby has a little cold and is stuffy she tends to have big huge spit ups. The mucus in her throat makes her gag and everything comes up. It's super gross and annoying but has nothing to do with true vomiting from a stomach bug or anything.

I agree with no vaccines if there is a fever. If you still feel like he's sick, then delay a bit.

I'm sure the doctor can give you some guidance. But also remember sometimes kids get over stuff much faster than adults. So a fever today/friday could be completely gone by Sunday/Monday.

We just had A in for her 4m well visit. We were also having her checked out for a lingering cough. She had no fever, but was diagnosed with sinus infection. I asked about waiting for the vaccines and the ped said since she didn't have a fever, she was comfortable giving the vaccines but ultimately let us choose. We went ahead and got the vaccines. I am firmly confident that there is zero correlation between vaccines (when healthy or sick) and autism.

We delayed the 12-mo vaccines until LO was healthy. Went in one month later. NOT anything to do with autism.

Peds judgement. We hAve had vaccines for my 2 year old at the tail end of a cold, but I wouldn't if her behavior was telling me she was not well or if she had a fever. Oh and autism wouldn't be the reason why we waited.

@winniebee: Same! DD always gets a little fever and is cranky/ sick for a couple days after getting vaccines so I would probably try to reschedule the appointment just so I didn't make her feel worse.
