The personalized baby towels from PBK arrived yesterday. While they are cute and look like the picture I was expecting a more plush, softer towel based on PBK's reputation and Lucie's List recommendation. We only bought two since we personalized one with baby's full name and the other with his nickname.
I'm not opposed to buying a third towel, but would like some recommendations. The towels we use are Macy's Hotel Collection and are pretty thick. Will that even matter for baby?

I got this one for the baby since we had a few pbk ones for my older daughter. It's not super thick but really really soft and nice and big so I can really wrap her up, plus it will work well into toddlerhood. We don't use hooded towels, but I really love these from Target. They are really soft!

@Mrs D: yes, the Macy's towels are awesome. Did you even bother with baby towels?
@looch: I have plenty of those. How long would I be able to get away with using them? Baby only gets sponge baths for the first month or so, right?
@Charm54: aww the skip hop ones are so cute. Thone would make a great 2 yr old bday gift once he shows a preference for animals. Right now DH picked out the animal towels *he* likes.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I still use them for my 5 year old. I just dried and dressed him right in the bathroom after the bath, I never used the towel to wrap him up though.
I gave my son full baths right away, just not with soap.

@Foodnerd81: that towel is so sweet, but I can't tell is the hooded part made out of absorbent towel material? Good point about the crevices the PBK towels may be just fine after all.
@sslm: I love the entire Circo line, but based on past feel tests in store I think the Cisco towels are even thinner than the PBK. 
In Canada, what's your Target equivalent?

Someone made us a hooded towel out of a regular bath towel and a hand towel. It is awesome and she said it's super easy to do. I'm not that crafty and never looked into it but I bet you could find a tutorial!

They grow out of the official baby ones super fast so you might want to skip them and use grown up towels or kids sizes. That being said, we like 3 sprouts and Ikea has an awesome bath poncho that's nice for after bath too.

I use our regular adult towels. I have never seen a need for baby towels.

which ones did you get? We got http://www.potterybarnkids.com/m/products/dot-essential-wrap/ which is 550 gram weight. did you look at the weight when purchasing them?
we also use IKEA hooded towels and they work great.

You can give your baby baths right away. For some it is really calming. :). I think they used to recommend only sponge or cloth baths because they didn't want the umbilical stump getting wet. Now they just say bathe your babe with soap or without and let it air dry or gently pat with a towel and you're good to go.
We just have toys r us towels that we were gifted. I pretty much only use one towel and she gets a bath every second or third day.

@Freckles: we were fixated on the style. I didn't the weight.

I love our Ikea towels. They wash brilliantly and are cheap enough to replace regularly if you accidentally wash them with blue jeans!

IKEA hooded towels are large, but not super fluffy. Once she hit around 9ish months though, she stopped liking having the hood on her head, so it doesn't really matter.

@skipra: ha! I'm not crafty either and all the sewing kits at the house are the little ones that I pick up from hotels.
@lawbee11: when we were TG those were the towels we were going to get. Once we found out the baby's sex my Southern need to personalize took over. Glad to know they last into toddlerhood.
@Mrs. Goose: my docs and nurses haven't caught up with the new advice then. No one mentioned not using soap yet and they all have said not to submerge baby. In fact, during my hospital birth class I had to finally just ask if it was hospital policy that baby must be bathed in hospital since she seemed perplexed why I would want to hold off and do it on my own at home.
@peachykeen: Lucie's List recommends the Clevamama towel! Posts on HB about baby's pooping right after they get out of the tub scared me a bit, so I didn't pick Clevamama or the Puj towel that wraps in fear of light towels getting ruined. Did you ever have that issue?

@Mrs. Yoyo: @SweetCaroline: ladies, there was very few gear that got my husband excited. Oddly, towels were one of them. I'll buy an non-essential, nice-to-have item (almost) any day of the week if it means DH is happily participating in baby prep.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We haven't had the problem yet, haha. I guess we've been lucky - she pooped a little in the bath ONCE in 19 months and never when we've had her in a towel. We still use the Clevamama ones in our rotation but we didn't use the snaps much past 12 months since she could stand on her own. They don't feel quite as soft after all these months, but we don't use fabric softener, so that might help.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We've never had an issue with H pooping right after her bath. She pooped in it once, but it scared her enough that she never did it again. We have Circo towels and they are pretty soft. I love the Thirsties cloth wipes as washcloths because they are so, so soft.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: totally weird. I know some people wait a day or two so that the baby's skin can absorb oils and leftover stuff from being in the uterus and the vernix on their skin. The only other reason I have heard for limited bathing is because babies have very delicate skin that can dry out easily, which is why some people don't use soap. I think the only reason they want to give them a bath in the hospital is to show first time parents how to "properly" give their baby a bath, but it isn't rocket science so if you don't want them to do it and show you, just say no thanks
So far my baby hasn't pooped in the tub or right after coming out at 5 months. . (Although now that I have said that she probably will). She has thrown up while in the bath twice... :(.

I preferred the thinner towels for when baby was really tiny. I felt like I could hold onto them better through the towel.

We had the personalized PBK hooded baby towel gifted to us that we used and liked well enough, but when DS got older we got a full-sized beach wrap. The wraps have been by far our favorite and its one of a few things DH has been sorta picky about (he made me order more). He's a very tall 19 month old and he still fits great in the beach wraps, and unlike the Circo or other ones we were gifted (which were either too thin, or too synthetic, or too small), these were the right heft and absorbency. I agree that super thick, soft towels aren't our favorite for DS.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @Mrs. Goose: they definitely told me not to submerge either baby in a bath until their umbilical stumps fell off (though both of mine fell off early anyway). At the hospital they asked if we wanted them to give her a bath and both times we said yes, so we didn't have to do it. But it was on the second day. "Bath" was a sponge bath really but they wiped off the birth grossness.

Fully agree with @lawbee11, the 3 Sprouts towels are the absolute best baby towels. They are more like towel blankets. They're amazing and I buy them for everyone now. @Mrs. Lemon-Lime
