Do you ever start to use the "words" your toddler uses for things? Like I accidentally call bananas nanas and my husband and I both have started calling our dog June Dune! It's so silly. I try not to use baby talk and speak normally but sometimes I can't help it.

I try SO hard not to but sometimes it's just so cute!!
DD says nana for banana too, veo for video, elf for elephant, baf for bath... I can go on and on!

I love DS's cute pronunciation of multi syllabic words, but I really try hard not to use them. I try to model speech as much as possible since he mimics everything I say anyway.

Yes. My LO is FOUR and my husband STILL says "nilky" like DD did when she was like 14 months. I guess I'm guilty too. I say munch for lunch. There's a couple cute phrases we've adopted too. Like, "the clouds are dark" and "I see your sad little face".
Overall she's always been so well spoken, so it's adorable when she does mispronounce something. That said, we never did much of the "baby talk" thing.

Oh we totally do this. Our DD always says "okape" instead of "okay" and we have adopted that into our own speech.

My son called our cat Lilia (her name was Olivia) so often that I started doing it too.

This thread is too cute! Yes, we totally do this. LO says "mens" instead of "men" as the plural for man (as in "I play with my mens" when referring to her little Plan Toy pirate ship guys) and I find DH and I saying it too, as we find it so cute.

We copy her adorable sayings and phrases. Like, whoa, that's a big messy mess! And she has funny ways of saying normal phrases that we have picked up- like she just says "here you go!" In a funny way and now I do it. She speaks really well so I think it's ok. I am not ready for when she starts saying elephant right.

We try not to but some things are too funny not to. Like he says poot for poop and calls hang nails pony tails!! So we've adopted those, haha.

my DD has a giant stuffed giraffe that she used to call "awitch" instead of olive. DH and I still call it that (3.5 years later) and she just looks at us like we're nuts

DH and I are definitely guilty of calling birds "chi chis," trains "choo choos," and chickens "bawk Bawks." Also, DD calls DS "B" instead of his name and we have all picked that up too.

Yep! When he was younger the play kitchen was "chicken" and he would say "hinger" instead of "finger". We'd adopt those cute mispronounciations. He doesn't do it as much now. I can't remember the exact word, but he properly pronounced something just this morning and I was sad that he could say it right!

I'm guilty of dumbing down words ("nana" instead of banana, "milkies" instead of milk) when she was a baby, and sticking with them now that she's almost two. I did manage to switch over to "milk" so she learned the real word, but she still thinks bananas are just nanas.
It's weird, too, because it's so important to me to teach her the real names for things like body parts and stuff.

Yes, and kind of intentionally. My 4 year old is mostly past that phase, but my husband and I loved her funny words so much that we started using a bunch of them. 'Son-sage' is our favorite.

@FaithFertility: Oh yeah I'm so bad at doubling all the words. And I used to teach her to say kitty, doggie, piggy, horsey, etc. Somehow she figured out to just say dog, pig, cat now haha.

2.5 says "headboard" for forehead, "finky and fum" for pinky and thumb, "I got a happen" instead of "I got an owie", and Elmo is "Elbow". I think these are so cute and find myself saying them to other people who look at me like I am crazy hahaha. Glad I am not the only one who does this.

Yes! My DD calls popsicles "hapakas" so we always call them that now!
ETA - My parents still point out "lellow fowloos" (yellow flowers) when we see them because I said it that way 30 years ago!

I did it as a nanny (still occasionally say some of them), so I know I will when she starts talking! I also have a tendency to use my own words for things and DH uses them too, so it's definitely gonna happen.

I'm sure I will adopt some cute mispronunciations and words for things. My little brother is 22 now, and we all still remember some of his funny mispronunciations. Sour crap for sauerkraut and Pom and Sean for Parmesan cheese.
