For kids in preschool who won't have much to take back and forth, what size backpack makes sense? They have small ones and then regular size backpacks. I was thinking since she is only 3 the smaller one makes sense, but then again with snow stuff or other layers for outside it may be better to get a bigger one. What type of backpack did your preschooler use?

Will she have a dedicated cubby there? My preschooler doesn’t bring a backpack because with a dedicated cubby (even the part timers have dedicated cubbies) there’s no need for a backpack. We have a napbag which is left at school and just brought home at the end of the week, as are seasonal clothing items (i.e., extra set of clothes plus rain coat, rain boots, and then in winter coat, mittens, hat and snow boots live at school, in her cubby).

From what I've been hearing, moms who have gone through the preschool/JK experience are recommending bigger ones.

I just let D pick out a regular one. I didn't bother with something with a zillion pockets though. He picked out an NFL one that lasted him a couple years.

We have the wildkin sidekick backpack. He leaves water bottle and change of clothing and shoes there so just needs lunch sack and lovies.

@MrsF: I was going to recommend that same one. We used it for pre-k, k and now we are using it going into grade 1. We got the matching lunch bag (and a yumbox!) and have used it all solidly for 2 years and we will get at least one more year out of it before she outgrows the backpack, not because the bag is worn out. Amazing bag, great quality and perfect size!

I got my daughter the Marmot half hitch backpack when she was two to carry her diapers and snacks. She still uses it now for preschool, and it works very well.

i think the skiphop backpacks are to small because kids have a lot of artwork so the teachers prefer bigger backpacks. also most kids never carry their backpacks - their parents do it!

@woodentulip: So glad to hear that! We bought the same one (and the lunchbox) but M doesn't start preschool until September. The school recommended that size and I figure you can't go wrong with a great brand!

My LO had a week preschool camp last week and I didn't have time to get her a regular backpack and we used a smaller bookbag. Her lunch didn't fit, only her extra change of clothes, and the artwork def did not pick. So when I picked her up from school, I had to carry the bag, lunchbox, other artwork in one hand and held her other hand. A bigger bookbag would def have helped.

Both my kids have the skip hop bags. I probably won't get DS a bigger one until he is 4 or 5.

My 3 year old had the small Skip Hop back pack this year and it was perfect!

We went with a bigger one so we could shove everything in (lunch, change of clothes etc ) we got the regular sized one from LLBean and love it.

Anyone have the PBKids backpacks? A mini is definitely too small to hold an 8.5x11 piece of paper, but I'm thinking the small would work....
